SCIENCE

LESSON
LESSON OBJECTIVES:
1. Determine the location of genes in chromosomes
2. Differentiate chromosomes, genes, alleles, and DNA
3. Discuss the types of chromosomes
4. Define mutation and its potential effects
5. Explain how the person's sex is determined and
inherited
his findings prompted other scientists to probe
further into the mystery of the
heredity principles.
Chromosome : Threadlike structures in the nucleus
of a cell that control heredity

Gene: Part of a chromosome that controls inherited traits.

Allele is one of two or more versions of a gene.

An individual inherits two alleles for each gene, one from each parent.

If the two alleles are the same, the individual is homozygous for that gene.

If the alleles are different, the individual is heterozygous.

SEX CHROMOSOMES AND DETERMINATIONS
PEDIGREE CHART - used to analyze the pattern of inheritance of a particular trait
throughout a family. Pedigrees show the presence or absence of a trait as it relates to the
relationship among parents, offspring, and siblings.
