Lesson 1: The Impact of Media and Information
• Media and information have always been
part of human culture and society, and they
have grown in response to our evolving
needs and developing technology. Print,
broadcast, and digital new media have
become more sophisticated and the
information they provide has grown more
complicated. It is up to the individual to
develop a level of literacy to cope with these
changes.
How does media and information literacy affect the

How does media and information literacy affect
society?
• One view of media and information
literacy assumes it is all about making
sure we have the “correct” information,
but it does not end there. Cognitive
biases can also get in our way while
seeming to be normal ways of thinking.
• Part of becoming more media and
information literate is recognizing our
own biases, and working to reduce or
eliminate them.
