FINITE AND NON FINITE

Finite Clause
A finite clause is a main clause or subordinate clause that must have a
verb to show tense.
The verb can be in the present or past tense.
Example :
1. We were allowed to come in because we arrived late.
2. Corruption affects you even if you don’t get close to it.
Non-finite clause
• A non finite clause is a subordinate clause containing a verb that does
not show tense, which means it does not show the time at which
something happened.
There are three types of non finite clauses
• To infinitive clause
• Present participle clause ( ing clause)
• Past participle clause
To infinitive clause
• He gave up his job to travel the world
• The person to make report the report to at the police station was the
sergeant.
• The temple to pray for our ancestors is Dalem Puri temple.
Present Participle clause
• The man standing in front of the class is cool
• Before becoming a bank robber, he was a police officer.
• You are the only one capable of solving the problem.
• Seeing no employment prospect, he became self employed.
Past Participle clause
• Trained as an acrobat since young, she has amazed audiences with
her superb skills.
• A woman recognized as one of the terrorist was found in Bali.
• The child intends to be a bank robber when asked what he would like
to be.
A non finite clause with subordinate
conjunction
• Her appointment, if approved, will make her the company’s first
female general Manager.
• The police , unless notified, will not carry out investigation.
• The rescuers found the boy, though injured, fully conscious.
• The tourists, If coming to GGC, will enter a cave.
• Though raining, she came to school
• Unless talking slow, we can understand her.
Which one is non finite clause
A . The police killed by Sambo is Joshua.
B. The man who came here yesterday is David Dkam.
C. After coming back from GGC, the tourist could enjoy the sunset.
D. I was talking when she called me.
Change this finite clause to non finite clause
1. 1. The man who speaks English well has worked in Europe.
2. The book that was bought yesterday is an English book.
3. After he had breakfast, he went to school.
4. He looked at her face, then he felt in love
5. Though she studied, she failed.
Change the non finite clause to finite clause
1. The boy sitting in the back row is Dio.
2. The walls painted white look larger.
3. Before coming to school, she has breakfast.
4. Cutting her finger, she was bleeding/
5. Though failed, she never gave up
Change into non finite !
1. The man who stood on the chair is crazy.
2. The book which was written badly is put in the trash bin.
3. The girl who has built this temple is rich.
4. The temple that was built by the king is amazing.
5. The people who burnt the trash are irresponsible.
6. The grass that has been cut looks neat and nice.
7. The man came late, he was tired.
8. They were born in Bangli, they can speak English well.
