Superlative and comparative adjectives

 First what are adjectives ?


 Adjectives are words that describe nouns, adjectives give as information such as the
size or age of a noun. (beautiful, big, happy, delicious)

 What is a comparative adjective?


 A comparative adjective compares someone or something with someone or
something else. It compare two nouns, people, places and things.
 Noun (subject) + verb + comparative adjective + than + noun (object).

 Ahmad is shorter than Ali.


 Physics is more interesting than Maths.
Comparative adjective tells us how one noun is different than other.
Syllables Form Examples

One syllables Adjective + er Cool = cooler


Hard = harder
Long = longer
Quick = quicker
Smart = smarter
late = later
Clean= cleaner
Old = older

Two syllables (end in- y) Adjective+ er Hungry = hungrier


Change y to – i Dirty = dirtier
Heavy = heavier
Early = earlier
Dry = drier

2 syllables More + adjective +than Beautiful= More beautiful


Modern = more modern
Expensive= more expensive
Confused = more confused
Famous = more famous
 Khaled is shorter than Ahmad
 He is nicer than him.
oShe is taller than her.
oSara looks happier than Hind.
oMy house is larger than hers.
oThis box is smaller than the one I lost.
oArabic is more difficult than English.
oThis pen is more expensive than other.
oMona is more famous than Amal.
Examples

 What is a superlative adjective?
 A superlative adjective compares someone or something to every other person or object in the
group.
 Noun (subject) + verb + the + superlative adjective + noun (object).

 Ahmad is the shortest child.


 Physics is the most interesting subject.
Syllables Form Examples

One syllables Adjective + est Cool = coolest


Hard = hardest
Long = longest
Quick = quickest
Smart = smartest
late = latest
Clean= cleanest
Old = oldest

Two syllables (end in- y) Adjective+ est Hungry = hungriest


Change y to – i Dirty = dirtiest
Heavy = heaviest
Early = earliest
Dry = driest

2 syllables most + adjective Beautiful= most beautiful


Modern = most modern
Expensive= most expensive
Confused = most confused
Famous = most famous

 Johnis the most handsome boy in the whole school.
He is the oldest guy in this group.
