calamitous event bringing great damage,
loss, or destruction.
Disasters can be serious disruptions to the
functioning of a community that exceed its
capacity to cope using its own resources.

Disaster Management
• Disaster management is the process of effectively preparing for and responding
to disasters, such as floods, earthquakes, epidemics, etc.
• It involves strategically organizing resources and responsibilities to reduce the
harm and suffering that disasters can cause. It also involves a systematic
approach to managing the phases of disaster prevention, preparedness, response,
and recovery.

5 Case Study : 1
The 2018 Kerala Floods
• Caused due to a highest level of monsoon rainfall in decades,
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD),
there was 2346.3 mm of precipitation, instead of the average
1649.55 mm. The unprecedented rainfall was caused by a spell
of low pressure over the region.
• Occurred on August 16, 2018
Flood in Kerala in 2018 • Destruction and Loss, In some areas, floodwater was between
3-4.5m deep. Floods in Kerala killed more than 410 people
since June 2018 in what local officials said was the worst
flooding in 100 years.
• Many of those who died had been crushed under debris caused

by landslides.
• More than 1 million people were left homeless in the 3,200
emergency relief camps set up in the area.
6 Case Study : 2
The 2011 AMRI Hospital Fire
• Caused due to a fire broke out at the basement of the hospital
due to faulty electrical wiring and spread to the upper floors.
• Occurred in Dhakuria area of Kolkata on December 9, 2011
• The fire affected more than 160 people, mostly patients and
staff who were asleep or trapped inside the wards. The disaster
killed 89 people, injured 199 people, and displaced many
Fire Man helping patients & staff. others.
• The disaster was a result of negligence and irresponsibility of
the hospital management and authorities.
• Some of the precautions that could have been taken include
improving the fire safety standards and equipment of the
hospital, following proper fire safety rules and regulations, AMRI Hospital with Fire
providing adequate training and awareness to the staff and
calling for immediate help from the fire department.
