MODULE 4 SECTION 2

GROUP 4
INTRODUCTION
Religion plays a crucial role in the lives of Filipinos, as it influences their attitudes,
characters, and perspectives. Globalization, the interconnectedness of all areas of
contemporary social life, has impacted religion in various ways, including the rise of
religious nationalism, the turn of religion into public life, the proliferation of
international terrorism, and the increase of individual religiosity. Religious nationalism
emerged after World War II, with laws often based on lawmakers' beliefs in Christianity.
Religion has also become a response to post-World War II modernism, with religious
traditions like Catholic liberation theology and Islamic fundamentalism entering public life.
The proliferation of international terrorism, such as religious extremism, has become a
central issue, with extremists believing it is their duty to fulfill God's will through violence.
Additionally, global migration has forced the appearance of religious traditions in places
previously considered a minority, resulting in the Easternization of the West.
Global migration has led to the
deterritorialization of religious traditions,
blurring the lines between culture and place. This
phenomenon is exemplified by the presence of
Islam in Europe and Catholicism-Christianity in
Arab nations. However, these workers can also
create attachment or criticism towards their home
religion. For example, the overseas movement of
Indians has created a network of finances and
religious identifications.

Global migration has led to the Easternization of

the West, with the West receiving new beliefs
from the East, including Asian religions like
Zoroastrianism, Confucianism, Buddhism, and
Taoism.
Religion is influenced by global trends and
impulses, using social media for
evangelization. American evangelists Osteen
and Cameron use Facebook for global reach.
Calls for ecumenism among Christian
churches, such as the Catholic-Orthodox
dialogue in 2006, are also prevalent.
Roudometof (2014) proposed four distinct glocalization models: indigenousization, vernacularization,
nationalization, and transnationalization, illustrating the global-local religion resulting from the interaction of
religion and culture.
VERNACULARIZATI
ON INDIGENIZATION
Vernacularization involves Indigenization involves
blending universal religions with adapting a universal religion to
local languages, creating new suit the specifics of a particular
branches like Orthodox ethnic group, as seen in the
Christianity, which stems from Zamboanga peninsula and the
Christianity. blend of African traditional
religions and Christianity.
TRANSNATIONALIZ
NATIONALIZATION ATION
Nationalization links nation and Transnationalization enhances
church, with religious religious nationalization by
institutions reflecting national identifying specific traditions of
identities and realities. national homelands, like Iglesia
Philippine Independent Church ni Cristo, a national Christian
is an example, while national organization with a Filipino
modifiers like Greek Orthodox roots and central authority.
Christianity are also common.
The globalization of religion has led to both conflict and peace, with
incidents such as the London Bridge jihadist attack and Israeli
extremists targeting Palestinians. However, it is not the sole cause of
global conflicts, as religions were established to bring God's will to
fruition. Conflicts are often rooted in identity, economics, privilege,
and power. Examples include Osama bin Laden's 2001 attack on the
World Trade Center, the Marawi City siege, and Hindu nationalism's
Saffron terror in India. The main focus is not on global conflicts but
on the role of religion in these conflicts. Extremists believe radical
measures are necessary to achieve God's will, while fundamentalists
believe in returning to sacred texts to legitimize actions. Nationalists
tie their traditions to their nation or homeland, and any threat to
their identity, power, privilege, and rights is a threat to their
traditions.

Religion plays a crucial role in the pursuit of world peace,
teaching moral principles and values to address conflicts and
improve individuals and society. Human assistance, such as
World Vision, aids in poverty reduction and economic equality.
Faith-centered mediation, such as Pope Francis' role in the US-
Cuba deal, is also essential for peace. Religion is influenced by
globalization, contributing to the rise of conflicts and the
achievement of world peace. Conflicts arise from different
interpretations of religious texts, either individualized or
institutionalized, and can manifest as economic and political
clashes.
