This document summarizes a seminar topic on peer-to-peer systems. It defines a peer-to-peer system as a computer network that allows peers to share network resources, computational power, and data storage without a central authority. It describes the architecture as one where each computer serves as both a client and server, with each device storing data on its own hard drive and sharing with others. It outlines benefits like low costs and ease of use, as well as disadvantages like potential performance issues and security risks. Finally, it briefly describes three types of peer-to-peer networks: unstructured, structured, and hybrid.

School of Computer Science Engineering and Information Science
Presidency University , Bengaluru PEER -TO –PEER system:
A peer-to-peer system is a computer network
which enables peers to share the network resources, computational power and data storage, without relying on a central authority. ARCHITECTURE: • Each computer in the network has the same set of responsibilities and capabilities.
• Each device in the network serves as both a
client and server.
• The architecture is useful in residential
areas, small offices, or small companies where each computer act as an independent workstation and stores the data on its hard drive. • Each computer in the network has the ability to share data with other computers in the network. BENEFITS: • There is no need for a server because sever are more expensive. • It is very easy to install or set user needs no technical knowledge. • It is less expensive. • Each user has to manage its own PC so there is no need for a network manager. • Peer-to-peer networks mostly used at home and in small offices. • There is less traffic than another network. DISADVANTAGE: • Every computer has access to share the data from every computer it slow down overall performance. • There is a security issue because each computer in the network shares resources and data. • There is no centrally backup for files and folders. TYPES: • Unstructured P2P networks: In this type of P2P network, each device is able to make an equal contribution. • Structured P2P networks: It is designed using software that creates a virtual layer in order to put the nodes in a specific structure. • Hybrid P2P networks: It combines the features of both P2P networks and client-server architecture.
