Background
• Hosanna, one of Ethiopia's earliest towns, was officially
founded in 1904 during the rule of Emperor Menelik II.
• formerly called ’Sech Duna’ by the local people.
• Later the name Hosanna was given by Ras Abate in 1904,
who was the governor of Lemo and Kembata Awraja in that
time.
• The town was the seat of Kembata and Hadiya province during
the time of the Imperial regimes.
• it was established as a municipality(local administrative zone)
in 1949

• It is the capital city of Hadiya Zone, comprises of three sub-
cities (kifle ketema) and eight kebeles.
• Location- located in the south west of Addis Ababa 232km
away via Alemgena - Hosanna transportation route.
• The administrative area of hosanna town is 10,414.3
hectares( 104,143,000m2) of land, out of which 4,585.48 ha.
(45,854,800m2) is planned.

-Hosaena’s rural areas are being transformed into urban settlements informally, without plan.
-These are Hakmura, Naremo, Bobicho, Kidigisa, Alela, Kalisha, Ambicho and Lebasha. Majority of these
sites are dominated by residential units without the provision of proper infrastructure and services.
Ambicho
• -Ambicho is a settlement situated to the north-east of Hosanna
town, close to the exit leading to Addis Ababa city. The
presence of a main road passing through Ambicho has led to
early development and transformation in the area.
• The establishment of Wachemo University and the improvement
of services such as electricity have facilitated peri-urbanization
in Ambicho, which is located north of Hosanna town near the
exit to Jimma town.
Historical Background
• Ambicho is a small village kebele town and one of the kebeles that is found
lemo woreda.
• The kebele has organized in three sub villages
- Major Ambicho
- Ambicho Gode
- Lower Ambicho
• The three villages have their own boundary. Ambicho located in adjacently
in the way of main roads of Hossana to Addis Ababa. The village located
nearly in hosanna town far to only 5 k.m. Ambicho has boundary with -
KALISHA west-BELESA,east-HOSSANA to the south west direction.
Historical Background
• Almost, most of the residents are farmers and their income generate from farming/
Agriculture and some of small commercial activities. - The village mostly covered by
Agricultural land and that of small urban character residential houses.- Now, a time
the village came to be urbanized because of different reasons.
• For example. When we see W ACHEMO UNIVERSITY .Before the construction of
the UNIVERSITY the land use as Agricultural land. Now, most of the surrounding
becomes residential quarter and commercial. - Before nearly 14 years ago . This
village has not the characteristics of urban. Especially WCU plot of land area 1000/o
covered by Agricultural land, the Farmers use the area for cultivation purpose. - As
we have observed the village residents have a very good inter - connection with each
other. - The village resident's way of social interaction are very strong. And they
celebrate different ceremony to gather
Ambicho’s current situation
• Ambicho is old aged in its settlement, residence being
Dominant in Existing Land use, it is high in its activity/
liveliness, Variety of building typology is medium,
Accessibility And Security is easy, and its Rate and extent of
Transformations is high.
• total population of Ambicho is above 7568
• There are a total of above 1100 households in the area.

Socio economic profile
• Transformation rate is higher in Ambicho. percentages of newcomers in Ambicho is great, Existence of primary
school since 1970’s promoted commercial activities such shops and restaurants in Ambicho. Furthermore,
Establishment of Wachemo University, construction of the Hosanna–Addis Ababa asphalt roadpassing through
Ambicho and its favorable topography attracts newcomers. This makes the site, a strategic location for the town
expansion. Currently the majority of land in Ambicho is transferred to newcomers in the past fourteen years.
• Ambicho Gode Primary School has been a cornerstone of education in Ambicho town since the Derg regime.
However, 68% of students quit after grade eight to start businesses or travel abroad, largely due to the town's
thriving economy. 50% of Ambicho's revenue comes from mixed sources, and 22% of households rely solely on
private businesses.

• In Ambicho, 53.13% of households are considered low income, and the majority of
income (16.3%) comes from remittances. The town has better infrastructure and services,
including an administrative building, a private health center, a health post, a primary
school, and a kindergarten. However, access to electricity is limited, with only a small
portion of households having private meters, while the rest rely on rented electricity. The
settlement has one public water source and are accessed by unpaved roads, with an asphalt
road passing through the center of the two sites.

potential, so there is no such luxurious
type of living style.
►POPULATION-Densely populated area that have no
clear and well setted pattern.
►MEANS OF INTERACTION(EKUB)-In ambicho , it is commonly referred to as "Ekub", which in
English is a Rotating Savings and Credit Association (ROSCA). This is where a pot of funds 1s
collected by a group of people who each contribute the same amount and then one person every
meeting is selected at random to receive the pot.
Iquib in ambicho is an association established by a small group of people in order to provide
substantial rotating funding for members in order to improve their lives and living conditions.
