Balance in a single-cylinder engine
This compromise varies according to

engine design but it is usually achieved

by including one third of the weight of

the connecting rod and small end in the

weight of the piston and then providing a

balance weight that is equivalent to 50%

of the piston weight.


Primary and Secondary Forces

a = ⍵2r [cos ⍬ + (cos 2⍬)/n]


Where……
⍵ = angular velocity of the crank, ⍬ = angle that the crank has turned
through, and n = connecting rod to crank ratio.
The force on the piston

Fp = m.a
(a = ⍵2r {cos ⍬ + (cos 2⍬)/n}
So….
Fp = m. ⍵2r {cos ⍬ + (cos 2⍬)/n}
Fp = m. ⍵2r cos ⍬ + m. ⍵2r (cos
2⍬)/n
The primary force = Fp = m. ⍵2r cos ⍬
The Scondary force = Fp = m. ⍵2r (cos 2⍬)/n
