The ELECTROMAGNETIC (EM)

SPECTRUM is a continuous range of
electromagnetic waves arranged in order
of frequency or wavelength. It is divided
into regions on the basis of a certain
frequency and wavelength interval.

Let’s dig the past!

About 150 years ago, James Clerk

Maxwell, an English scientist,
developed a scientific theory to explain
electromagnetic waves. He noticed that
electrical fields and magnetic fields can
couple together to form
electromagnetic waves.

What is EM Waves?
Electromagnetic waves or EM waves do not need matter to transfer energy.
These are made by vibrating electric charges and can travel through space by
transferring energy between vibrating electric and magnetic fields.

MS. ANGELA T. TEODORO

How do moving charges create magnetic fields?

Any moving electric

charge is surrounded by
an electric field and a
magnetic field.

What is the speed of EM waves?
■ Generally speaking, we say Material Speed (m/s)
that light travels in waves, Vacuum 3.0 x 108
and all electromagnetic
radiation travels at the Air <3.0 x 108
same speed which is about
3.0 x 108 m/s through a Water 2.26 x 108
vacuum.
Glass 2.0 x 108
Diamond 1.24 x 108

What is the wavelength & frequency of an EM wave?

■ Wavelength - distance from

crest to crest.

■ Frequency - number of
wavelengths that pass a given
point in 1 s.

■ As frequency increases,
wavelength becomes smaller.

Properties of EM Waves and Examples
■ All matter contains
charged particles
■ EM waves carry

moving; therefore, all
objects emit EM
waves.

■ The wavelengths
become shorter as
the temperature of
the material
increases.

Properties of EM Waves
■ Electromagnetic waves have properties of speed,
wavelength, and frequency.
The speed of a wave is a product of its wavelength and
frequency. Because all electromagnetic waves travel at the
same speed through space, a wave with a shorter
wavelength must have a higher frequency, and vice versa.
This relationship is represented by the equation:
Speed = Wavelength × Frequency

Problem-Solving : Seatwork#1

Given : v=c=3.0x10⁸ m/s

f = 6.0x10¹⁴ Hz
Required : ٨ =?
Equation : ٨= v/f
Solution : ٨ = 3.0x10⁸ m/s / 6.0x10¹⁴ Hz
Answer : ٨ = 0.5x10⁻⁶ m or 5.0x10⁻⁷ m
