Divisibility rules for 2,
5, and 10

Divisibility rules for 3,

6, and 9
What will you learn from this lesson?

Uses divisibility rules for 2, 5, and 10 to find the

common factors of numbers.

Uses divisibility rules for 3, 6, and 9 to find common

factors.
Divisible by 2
• If the number ends with 0, 2, 4, 6 and 8 it is divisible
by 2.

Examples:
456 Yes, because the number ends with even number 6

172 Yes, because the number ends with even number 2

24 Yes, because the number ends with even number 4

78 Yes, because the number ends with even number 8

233 No, because the number ends with an odd number 3

Divisible by 5
• If the number ends with 5 and 0 it is divisible by 5.

Example 1: 425 , 750, 350, 555, 865

Yes, because all the number ends with 5 and 0

Example 2: 424 , 753, 351

No, because all the number does not end with 5

and 0
Divisible by 10

• If the number ends with 0 it is divisible by 10.

Examples: 425 , 750, 350, 555, 863

Only 750 and 350 are divisible by 10, because

both numbers end with 0

425, 555 and 863 are not divisible by 10, because

these numbers do not end with 0
Divisible by 3
• If the sum of the digits of a number is divisible by 3,
then the number is divisible by 3.

Example 1: 27 2+7=9 9÷3=3

27 is divisible by 3 because the sum of
its digits is 9 which is divisible by 3.

Example 2: 427 4+2 + 7 = 13 13 ÷ 3

427 is not divisible by 3 because the

sum of its digits is 13 which is not
divisible by 3.
Divisible by 6

• If the number is divisible by both 2 and 3, then the

number is divisible by 6.

Example 1: 144 1+4+4=9 9÷3=3

144 is divisible by 3 because the sum
of its digits is 9 which is divisible by 3.

Observed that its last digit is an even

number 4, therefore it is also divisible
by 2.

Since, 144 is divisible by both 2 and 3

therefore 144 is a number divisible by
6
Example 2: 318 3 + 1 + 8 = 12 12 ÷ 3 = 4
318 is divisible by 3 because the sum of its
digits is 12 which is divisible by 3.

318 Observed that its last digit is an even

number 8, therefore it is also divisible
by 2.

Since,318 is divisible by both 2 and 3

therefore it is a number divisible by 6
Divisible by 9
• If the sum of the digits of a number is Divisible 9 without
remainder.

Example 1: 87651 8+ 7 + 6+ 5+ 1 = 27 27 ÷ 9 = 3

87651 is divisible by 9 because the sum of its

digits is 27 which is divisible by 9 without
remainder.

Example 2: 1719 1+ 7 + 1+ 9 = 18 18 ÷ 9 = 2

1719 is divisible by 9 because the sum of its

digits is 18 which is divisible by 9 without
remainder.
Remember:
Divisible by 2 If the number ends with 0, 2, 4, 6
and 8 it is divisible by 2.

Divisible by 5 If the number ends with 5 and 0 it is

divisible by 5.

Divisible by 10 If the number ends with 0 it is

divisible by 10.

If the sum of the digits of a number

Divisible by 3 is divisible by 3, then the number is
divisible by 3.
Divisible by 6 If the number is divisible by both 2 and
3, then the number is divisible by 6.
Divisible by 9 If the sum of the digits of a number is Divisible 9
without remainder, then the number is divisible
by 9.
