 Divisibility rules or divisibility tests are ways
of determining whether a whole number is
divisible by another whole number without doing
actual division. It is done by examining the digits
of the number.

 A number is divisible by another number when

the number being divided will not give any
remainder.
RULES ON DIVISIBILITY
1. Divisibility by 2
 A number is divisible by 2, if it ends in 0, 2, 4, 6, or 8
 All even numbers are divisible by 2.
Examples: 240 452 6 748 55 786
2. Divisibility by 3
• A number is divisible by 3, if the sum of the digits is divisible
by 3.
Example 1: 459 4 + 5 + 9 = 18 (18 is divisible by 3)

Example 2: 2 578 2 + 5 + 7 + 8 = 22 (22 is not divisible by 3)

Therefore 2 578 is not divisible by 3

RULES ON DIVISIBILITY
3. Divisibility by 4
 A number is divisible by 4, if it ends in two zeros or the last
two digits form a number divisible by 4
Examples: 200 224 6 744
430 30 is not divisible by 4

Therefore 430 is not divisible by 4.

4. Divisibility by 5
• A number is divisible by 5, if it ends in 5 or zero.

• Examples: 25 50 615 1200

RULES ON DIVISIBILITY
5. Divisibility by 6
 A number is divisible by 6, if it is divisible by both 2 and 3.

Example 1: ends in 4 (divisible by 2)

234 2 + 3 + 4 = 9 (divisible by 3)

*Since 234 is divisible by both 2 and 3,then 234 is also divisible by 6.

Example 2: 176 ( 176 is an even number so it is divisible by 2)
1 + 7 + 6 = 14 ( 14 is not divisible by 3)

Therefore, 176 is not divisible by 6.

RULES ON DIVISIBILITY
6. Divisibility by 7
• A number is divisible by 7,when you double the last digit and
subtract it from the remaining digits, until the difference is
divisible by 7.

Example: 2 772 double 2 = 4, then subtract

- 4
2 73 double 3 = 6, then subtract
- 6
21 the difference is divisible by 7

Therefore 2 772 is divisible by 7.

RULES ON DIVISIBILITY
Divisibility by 7
• A number is divisible by 7,when you double the last digit and
subtract it from the remaining digits, until the difference is
divisible by 7.

Example: 137 462 double 2 = 4, then subtract

- 4
137 42 double 2 = 4, then subtract
- 4
137 double 7 = 14, then subtract
- 14
? Therefore, 137 462 is not divisible by 7.
RULES ON DIVISIBILITY
7. Divisibility by 8
If the number formed by the last 3 digits is divisible by 8. Also,
a number ending in three zeros are also divisible by 8
Examples: 512 512 ÷ 8 = 64 42 000
27 720 720 ÷ 8 = 90 6 000
8. Divisibility by 9
• A number is divisible by 9, if the sum of the digits of the
number is divisible by 9.
Examples: 216 2+1+6=9 9 is divisible by 9
2 898 2 + 8 + 9 + 8 = 27 27 is divisible by 9
792 7 + 9 + 2 = 18 18 is divisible by 9
356 3 + 5 + 6 = 14 14 is not divisible by 9
Therefore, 356 is not divisible by 9.
RULES ON DIVISIBILITY
9. Divisibility by 10
A number is divisible by 10, if the number ends in zero.
Examples: 210 3 450 45 000 32 170

10. Divisibility by 11
If the sum of the digits in the odd places and the sum of the
digits in the even places are equal or their difference is zero
or a multiple of 11.
ODD EVE ODD ODD EVE ODD EVE
N N N
Examples: 462 5 038
4 6 2 5 0 3 8

ODD 4+2=6 ODD 5+3=8

EVEN 6 EVEN 0+8=8
RULES ON DIVISIBILITY
Divisibility by 11
If the sum of the digits in the odd places and the sum of the digits in the even
places are equal or their difference is zero or a multiple of 11.

Examples: 5 436 ODD EVE ODD EVE 794 ODD EVE ODD
N N N
5 4 3 6 7 9 4
ODD 5+3=8 ODD 7 + 4 = 11
EVEN 4 + 6 = 10 EVEN 9

The sums of the digits in the odd and even places are not equal, so 5 436
and 794 are not divisible by 11.
RULES ON DIVISIBILITY
11. Divisibility by 12
A number is divisible by 12, If the sum of the digits of the number is
divisible by both 3 and 4.

Example 1: 372 3 + 7 + 2 = 12 (12 is divisible by 3)

372 72 is divisible by 4 (72 ÷ 4 = 18)

Therefore 372 is divisible by 12.

Example 2: 5 538 5 + 5 + 3 + 8 = 21 (21 is divisible by 3)

5 538 38 is not divisible by 4 (38 ÷ 4 = 9.5)

Therefore, 5 538 is not divisible by 12.
