DIVISIBILITY RULES

(from 1-15)
RULE FOR 2
• If its last digit is even.
• Ex; 69,698/ since 8 is an even number then we can safely
say this is divisible by 2
RULE FOR 3
• If its sum of its digits are divisible by 3
• Ex; 693,012, 6+9+3+1+2=21, since 21 is divisible by 3 then
we can say that 693,012 is divisible by 3
RULE FOR 4
• If its last 2 digits are divisible by 4
• Ex; 14,916
• Since 16 is divisible by 4 then 14,016 is divisible by 4
RULE FOR 5
• If its last digit is 0 or 5
• Ex; 600,900, since its last digit is 0 then we can say its
divisible by 5
RULE FOR 6
• If its divisible by 2 and 3
• Ex; 32,022,
• For 2, since it ends with an even number its divisible by 2
• For 3, 3+2+2+2=9, since its divisible 3 as well we can say
its divisible by 6
RULE FOR 7
• Take the last digit off the number and double it, then
subtract it from the remaining digits. If the result is
divisible by 7, then its divisible by 7, repeat the rule if
necessary.
• Ex; (original number is 30247) 3024-(2x7)=301-(2x0)=30-
(2x1)=28, since 28 is divisible by 7 then we can say 30247
is divisible by 7.
RULE FOR 8
• If the number formed by the last 3 digits of a number is
divisible by 8
• Ex; 708, 312 , we will only use the last 3 digits for this, we
take out 3 because its odd, then add 4 to the rest of the
digits after 3; 12+4=16, since 16 is divisible by 8 then
708,312 is divisible by 8.
RULE FOR 9
• If the sum of its digits are divisible by 9
• Ex; 1,549, 1+5+4+8= 18, since 18 is divisible by 9 then
1,549 is divisible by 9
RULE FOR 10
• If its last digit is 0
• Ex; 369,939,140, since it ends with 0, then 369,939,140 is
divisible by 10
RULE FOR 11
• If the sum of the digits in the odd places MINUS the sum
of the digits in the even places is equal to 0 or a multiple
of 11, then its divisible by 11
• Ex; 75,801
• (7+8+1)-(5+0)=11, since 11 is divisible by 11 then 75,801 is
divisible by 11
RULE FOR 12
• The factors of 12 are 3 and 4, so if its divisible by 3 and 4,
its divisible by 12
• Ex; 720
• 3: 7+2+0= 9, Its divisible by 3
• 4: the last digit is 20 which is divisible by 4, its divisible by
4
• Now we can say that 720 is divisible by 12.
RULE FOR 13
• If 4x the last digit of the remaining leading truncated number is
divisible by 13, apply repetition if necessary.
• Ex; (original number is 12,831)
• 1283+(4x1)=1287
• 128+(4x7)=156
• 15+(4x6)=39
• Since its divisible by 13, then 12,831 is divisible by 13
RULE FOR 14
• The factors of 14 are 2 and 7, if its divisible by 2 and 7 its divisible
by 14
Ex; number is 3024
For 2, its last digit is 4 which is an even number, which means its
divisible.
For 7, 302-(4x2)=29-(4x2)=21 which is divisible by 7
These mean that 3024 is divisible by 14
RULE FOR 15
• The factors of 15 are 3 and 5, so if its divisible by 3 and 5,
its divisible by 15
• Ex; 55,230
• For 3; The sum of the digits: 5+5+2+3+0=15 which is
divisible by 3
• For 5; it ends with 0 it means its divisible by 5
• Therefore, 55,230 its divisible by 15
