Abstract

 In Electric Vehicles (EVs), a Bi-directional converter is incorporated since the power flow will be in

reverse direction while regenerative braking and by collecting this power, effective operation can be
achieved.
 Enhance energy efficiency and sustainability in transportation technologies, particularly in electric
vehicles
 Description o f Bi-directional DC-D C converter has given with high voltage gain, continuous
current conduction
 This is applicable in Electric vehicles, Distribution Generation, Energy Storage Units and Micro
grids.
Introduction

 During the vehicle operation, the power required for the motor needs to be provided by the battery.
 A step-up DC-DC converter is required to give the power from Battery to motor.
 During the regenerative braking the power flow will be in the reverse direction
 In order to store regenerative power, onboard converters need to Bidirectional.
 Hence Bidirectional Buck Boost converter are employed.
 A Bi-directional DC-DC converter which is an electronic device used to convert electrical power
between two DC voltage levels bidirectionally.
 This means it can either step up the voltage from a lower level to a higher level or step down the voltage
from a higher level to a lower level, depending on the application's requirements.
Problem Statement

To design a bidirectional DC-DC converter system having high voltage gain and efficiency, capable of
efficiently managing energy flow during regenerative braking in electric vehicles. This involves
developing a converter that can seamlessly switch between stepping up the voltage for energy storage
during braking and stepping down the voltage for power delivery to the vehicle's battery and system,
ensuring optimal energy transfer and overall system performance
OBJECTIVES

 Analysis of specifications, design equations of Bi-directional DC-DC converter for

wide voltage gain and compare it with conventional type.
 Analyze the changes made for conventional converter to achieve wide voltage gain.
 Design the circuit components for the chosen specifications.
 Design the circuit layout and simulate using PSIM/MATLAB software tools and
verifying the output .
 Discuss the insights of the converter.

conventional converter In forward operation

 when the Switch S1 is turned ON and energy is stored in

the inductor L.
 When S1 is turned OFF and S2 is turned ON the power
from both source as well as the inductor will feed the load
and thus step the voltage level.
 the converter operates in boost mode

In the backward operation

 when SI is turned OFF and S2 is turned ON

 the converter operates in buck mode.

converter A. FORWARD OPERATION (A to B Operation):

 In this mode, switch Ql is turned ON by giving gate pulse

G1 and switches Q2 and Q3 will be turned OFF.
 During this mode the current path is from Va to Q l, LI and
Va .
 The current in port B can be supplied from the initially
charged inductors and capacitors.
 The output current is reverse in direction in resistive
connected Load.

B. BACKWARD OPERATION (B to A operation):

 In this mode Ql is turned OFF and Q2 and Q3 will be
turned ON with gate signals G2 and G3 given to the
converter
