Beginning
• M: Hello viewers, welcome to TalkFamous. How are you all doing? Today, João, Manu, Daniel, Mateus
and I are going to interview a very special person. This person has been extremely important to our
history.
• D: She was the first Black woman elected to the United States Congress in 1968 (Nineteen sixty-eight).
This person is Shirley. Welcome, Shirley! How are you?
• R: Hi guys, I’m very good, thanks very much for inviting me to participate in TalkFamous.
• J: The pleasure is all ours. Can we start with the questions?
• R: Of course!
• E: Shirley, could you please tell us about your importance in the historical context?
• R: Well, I was the first Black candidate to run for the United States presidency in 1972, and I was also the
first woman candidate for the Democratic Party, opening opportunities for everyone, even though it was
challenging.
• A: Really? That's very important to show that everyone can.
• R: Yes, it was very important to show that everyone is capable of doing whatever they want when they
fight for it.
• M: Yes, now let's move on to the next question. Shirley, what was your greatest achievement?
• R: Besides being the first Black woman elected, I helped establish the
Congressional Black Caucus, a parliamentary group for Black
members of the United States Congress, and the National Organization
for Women.
• D: Oh, this is very important. The next question is, what were the
biggest obstacles during your journey?
• R: In my journey, the biggest obstacles I faced, one of them was
obviously prejudice, and I suffered three assassination attempts.
• E: Oh my good, three?
• R: Yes, I endured three assassination attempts, but thank God I'm well.
• J: Now a very important question. What socioemotional skills were
developed on your journey?
• R: I think the main skill I developed was resilience, as I had to adapt
to situations, deal with negative experiences, threats, and tragedies.
• A: Shirley, is there a quote that you believe in and carry with you in
your life that you would like to share with our audience as we wrap up
our program?
• R: Well, I have many, but one that I would like to share with all of you
is that you don't make progress by standing on the sidelines, whining,
or complaining. You make progress by implementing ideas. Never
forget this!
• M: Thank you very much, Shirley, for talking with us and sharing a bit
of your story with all of us. Thank you to everyone who has watched
until here!
• J: And here is where we conclude our TalkFamous. Goodbye!
