Operations
Prof. Akila Victor
Definition
• Morphological image processing is a
collection of non-linear operations related to
the shape or morphology of features in an
image.
• Applications
– Boundary Extraction
– Thinning

Structuring Elements
• Morphological techniques probe an image with a
small shape or template called a structuring
element.
• The structuring element is positioned at all possible
locations in the image and it is compared with the
corresponding neighborhood of pixels.
Concepts
• Hit
• Fit
• Miss

Fundamental Operations
• Erosion
• Dilation
Erosion
• Erosion (usually represented by ⊖) is one of two
fundamental operations (the other being dilation)
in morphological image processing from which all
other morphological operations are based.
• The erosion operation usually uses a structuring
element for probing and reducing the shapes contained
in the input image.
Cont…
• The erosion of a binary image f by a structuring
element s (denoted f ⊖ s) produces a new binary
image g = f s with ones in all locations (x,y) of a
structuring element's origin at which that structuring
element s fits the input image f, i.e.
• g(x,y) = 1 if s fits f
and 0 otherwise,
repeating for all pixel coordinates (x,y).

Dilation
• Dilation (usually represented by ⊕) is one of the
basic operations in mathematical morphology.
• The dilation operation usually uses a structuring
element for probing and expanding the shapes
contained in the input
Cont…
• The dilation of an image f by a structuring
element s (denoted f s) produces a new binary
image g = f ⊕ s with ones in all locations (x,y) of a
structuring element's origin at which that structuring
element s hits the the input image f,
i.e. g(x,y) = 1 if s hits f
and 0 otherwise,
repeating for all pixel coordinates (x,y).
• Dilation has the opposite effect to erosion -- it adds a
layer of pixels to both the inner and outer boundaries
of regions.

Compound Operations
More interesting morphological operations can
be performed by performing combinations of
erosions and dilations
The most widely used of these compound
operations are:
– Opening
– Closing
