INTERNAL INFLUENCES IN SOUTHEAST ASIAN ART CAMBODIA Earlier Khmer art were influenced by Indian influences of Hindu themes. By the 7th century, Khmer sculpture begins. To drift away from its Hindu influences – pre- Gupta for the Buddhist figures, Pallava for the Hindu figures – and through constant stylistic evolution, it comes to develop its own originality, which by the 10th century can be considered complete and absolute. THAILAND Thai art was influenced by indigenous civilizations of the Mon and Khmer. By the Sukothai and Ayutthaya period, Thai had developed into its own unique style and was later further influenced by the other Asian styles, mostly by Srilankan and Chinese. LAOS The arts and architecture of Laos, as with the rest of Southeast Asia, tend to draw their influences from India, China and its rich heritage of indigenous traditions. VIETNAM Vietnamese sculpture has been heavily influenced by the three traditional religions: Taoism, Confucianism, and Buddhism, which come from neighboring countries China and India. Examples of early Vietnamese sculpture can be found in common houses, temples, and pagodas. INDONESIA Indonesia has a particularly rich tradition of Hindu- Buddhist sculpture, and it was strongly influenced by India from the 1st century CE onward. Buddhist art in Indonesia reached its golden era under the Sailendra dynasty of the Sri Vijaya Empire between the 8th and 13th centuries. MALAYSIA Chinese and Indian Cultural influences made their mark when trade began with those countries. And increased with immigration to Malaysia. Other cultures that heavily influenced that of Malaysia include Persian, Arabic, and British. SINGAPORE
