Problem:
An air conditioned theater is to be maintained at 80 degrees
Fahrenheit dry bulb temperature and 50% relative humidity.
The calculated total sensible heat load in the theater is
620,000 BTU/hr., and the latent heat load is 210,000 BTU per
hour. The air mixture at 84 degrees F dry bulb and 72
degrees F wet bulb temperature by chilled water-cooling coils
and delivered as supply to the theater. Calculate tons of
refrigeration required. Solve in English and Metric.
Solution:
Given:
 pt 1. @ 84 deg F DBT, 72 deg F WBT or
 pt 2. @ 63 deg F DBT, 59 deg F WBT
 pt 3. @ 80 deg F DBT, 50% RH

Qs = 620,000 BTU/hr

Qlatent = 210,000 BTU/hr

Required:
• Cooling Load in TOR (English)
1.) Working Equation Qa = 2522.17 lb/min*(35.8 – 25.8)BTU/lb

Qa = ma*(h1 – h2) Qa = 25221.17 BTU/min/200

TOR/BTU/min
Unknown mass flow rate ma

Solving for ma: Qa = 126.11 TOR

Qs = ma*Cpa*(T3 – T2)

620,000 BTU/hr = ma*0.241 BTU/lb*F(80 – 63)F

ma = 151,330.2416 lb/hr/60

ma = 2,522.17 lb/min
Solution:
Given:
 Pt 1. @ 28.9 deg C DBT, 22.2 deg C WBT or
 Pt 2. @ 17.22 deg C DBT, 15 deg C WBT
 Pt 3. @ 26.67 deg C DBT, 50% RH

Qs = 181.7 kW

Qlatent = 61.54 kW

Required:

Cooling Load in TOR (metric)

2.) Working Equation Qa = 19.23 kg/s*(65.1-42)kJ/kg

Qa = ma*(h1 – h2) Qa = 444.213 kJ/s or kW

Unknown mass flow rate ma Qa =444.213 kW(1 TOR/3.5167kW)
Qa = 126.32 TOR
Solving for ma:

Qs = ma*Cpa*(T3 – T2)

181.7 kW = ma*1 kJ/kg-K(26.67-17.22)K

ma = 19.22 kg/s
