Topic: Enzymes

Objective:
- investigate the effects of various conditions on the
activity of enzymes
Key Term
Enzymes - organic molecules, which speed up the reactions.

Catalyst - a substance that accelerates a chemical reaction.

Substrate - the substance on which an enzyme acts.

Enzymes
Enzymes - biological catalysts which accelerate a reaction in a living
organism.

Reaction
With enzymes Without enzymes

Quickly and effectively Very slowly

Enzyme-substrate complex
Enzyme properties
1) Named by adding the suffix “-ase” to either the name of the substrate.
(Chitin – chitinase, lactose – lactase)

2) Enzyme cannot initiate reactions by themselves

(role is to accelerate the reactions already initiated)

3) Enzymes are synthesized within cells

(but can function in both intracellular and extracellular conditions)

4) Enzymes work best at specific pH

(known as optimal pH of enzymes)
Enzyme properties
5) Enzymes can be regulated by special molecules, which are called
inhibitors / activator
(inhibitors stop the enzymatic activity / activators increase activity)

6) Enzymes can be denatured at high temperatures

(optimal temperature of enzymes)

7) Most enzymes are proteins

Activity 1
1. Compare the work of enzymes with
the action of inorganic catalysts.
What are their differences and
similarities?

2. Complete the following table.

Write E (enzyme) or C (catalyst) into
the empty cells.
Homework
Complete the following table. Write
names of substrates for the following
enzymes.
