STANDARDS AND
COMPETENCIES
Simplified by: MLDe La Cruz
CURRICULUM STANDARDS
 Are broad statements of what the students need to know and do as a
result of learning.
Classes of Standards based on K to 12 Curriculum:
1. Content Standards – standards that identify and set the essential
knowledge and understanding that should be learned by the students
2. Performance Standards – are standards that describe the abilities and
skills that the learners are expected to demonstrate in relation to the
content standards and integration of the 21st century skills
LEARNING COMPETENCIES

 Refer to the knowledge, skills and understanding that learners

need to demonstrate in every lesson or activity.
STEPS FOR UNPACKING CURRICULUM
STANDARDS AND COMPETENCIES
1. CLASSIFY STANDARDS AS KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND VALUES
A. KNOWLEDGE – learning competency that calls for remembering and basic comprehension of a
concept or a skill
B. SKILL – learning competency that calls for the learner to demonstrate or apply a skill or desired
behavior
C. VALUES – learning competency that calls for valuing and appreciation
2. IDENTIFY THE PREQUISITE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND VALUES FOR EACH LEARNING
COMPETENCY.
3. LOOK FOR THE DESIRED SKILLS OR BEHAVIOR IN EVERY COMPETENCY. IDENTIFY
THE MOST SUITABLE ACTIVITY FOR EACH DESIRABLE BEHAVIOR.
4. CLASSIFY LEARNING COMPETENCIES TO DETERMINE APPROPRIATE ASSESSMENT
TOOLS.
STANDARD with CONVENTIONAL

 These are learning competencies that require traditional assessment
tools like quizzes and exams.
 Examples
 Describe the characteristics of sounds
 Identify parts of the respiratory system
 Discuss the judicial system in the Philippines
 Explain different communication models
 Identify primary colors
STANDARDS with PERFORMANCE TASKS
(SPT)
 These are learning competencies that require performance tasks for
assessment or authentic assessment.
 Examples
 Perform examples of Philippine folk dance
 Write an essay about Religion and its impact on Peace and Order
 Demonstrate how to dissect a frog
 Make a craft from natural and indigenous materials
STANDARDS for CONTINUING
DEVELOPMENT (SCD)
 These are competencies that focus on values and attitudes that
cannot be assessed.
 Examples
 Recognize the basic rights of a child
 Appreciate the role of mathematics in everyday life
 Recognize and appreciate the contributions of science in our daily life
 Develop healthy eating habits
 Respect different cultural practices
Identify whether the learning competencies are
knowledge, skills, or values. Then classify whether each
competency is SCT, SPT or SCD
