DEFINITION

A compound noun is a noun that is made with two

or more words and each compound noun acts as a
single unit and can be modified by adjectives and
other nouns.
STRUCTURE
A compound noun is usually (noun + noun) as in football or (adjective +
noun) as in full moon .
But there are other combinations like:
• Verb + noun as in washing machine
• Verb + proposition as in check-out
And many other combinations
HEADING
The head has the core meaning in a compound word. It is the most
important part of a compound noun that defines the part of speech of the
whole compound noun
For example: the head of the compound noun handbag is bag, since a
handbag is a bag, not a hand. The other elements of the phrase or compound
modify the head, and are therefore the head's dependents.
TYPES OF COMPOUND NOUNS
There are three types of compound nouns.
1- open / spaced: as it has space between words.
Examples: ( tennis shoe, high school, first aid , hot dog)
2- hyphenated: it has hyphen between words.
Examples: ( sun-dried, part-time, in-depth, empty-handed)
3- closed/solid: this type has no space or hyphen between the words.
Examples: (popcorn, notepad, bookmark, footprint)
WRITING COMPOUND NOUNS
Compound nouns normally have two parts, the first part tell the purpose of
the word and the second identifies it with what or who questions, that type
of nouns often have a different meaning than the other separate nouns.
water --- tank , water tank (it has more specific meaning when it
combined together)
And related to types of compound nouns that we had mention, compound
nouns can be written as singe word (closed), as a word with hyphen
(hyphenated),or as two words (spaced). There are no specific rules about it
but there is one clear rule about writing, is to write the most common
compound nouns as one word and the others as separate words.
IN CONCLUSION
The concept of the compound nouns is simple, it is a
term that contains of two or more individual nouns stuck
together. in fact you might not even realize that we use
compound nouns everyday at any part of speaking and
writing in English.
