About the Poet
Marcus Natten is a Norwegian writer who was born in Sydney. His
mother, Lisa from Germany and father ,Helmut was from Austria.
Markus Natten got his education from Engadin high school and studies
English and History from the University of New South Wales. He wrote
his lovely poem “Childhood” when he turned twelve..

THEME OF THE POEM
• The poem, "Childhood", focuses on the theme of the loss of innocence. In
this poem, the poet, Marcus Natten, wonders when and where he lost his
childhood. In this quest to find the moment he grew up, Marcus delves into
the innocence and faith he had lost even though he had gained a rational
personality.
• The poem Childhood is nostalgic because the poet is talking about his lost
childhood throughout the lines. He talks about the innocence and
imaginations which he had during his childhood. He used to believe in Hell
and Heaven. But now that he is grown up, he sees adults as hypocrites
because they preach about love but have hate in their heart.
• Now, the poet has rational mind. He does not believe in imaginary things.
This is why he desires to go back to his childhood.

IMPORTANCE OF CHILDHOOD

• Early childhood experiences from birth to age 8 affect the


development of the brain's architecture, which provides the
foundation for all future learning, behavior and health. A
strong foundation helps children develop the skills they need to
become well-functioning adults.
• The time between birth and age 3 is a period of rapid brain
development when billions of connections between individual neurons
are established. Mechanisms and interventions to support that
development must be available beginning at birth.

The childhood of the poet Marcus Natten. In the Summary of Childhood, the
poet discusses the loss of his childhood. The poet talks about the moment
where this innocence was lost. He talks about various instances when he could
have lost his childhood. Furthermore, the poet realizes that the world is not as
it seems. He remembers when his thoughts changed. The poet believes that the
people around him are hypocrites. It seems that the poet will never again be
able to trust the people around him. This is because he is aware of their
hypocrisy. The poet believes that adults preach love, but their actions do not
reflect it. The author tells us that his childhood was spent in some forgotten
place. Furthermore, the poet explains that his childhood is hidden in the face of
an innocent infant.
