INTRODUCTION
What is fluid mixing?

• The movement of fluids to enhance a

process result, that is accomplished by
means of an agitation source.

• The type of operation and equipment

used during mixing depends on the state
of materials being mixed (liquid, semi-
solid or solid).

OBJECTIVES

1. To observe flow pattern of three (3) different impellers or agitator.

2. To observe flow pattern with and without the use of baffles.

MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT REQUIRED

1. A mixer such as cake mixer, hand mixer or paint mixer

2. Two (2) types of fluids (e.g. water, oil, sugar syrup etc)

3. Small amount of pellets to observe the flow pattern (e.g. sesame seed, coriander seed,
etc)

4. A transparent container or a container (spherical) that can observe the flow pattern (at
least can fill about two (2) litres of fluid).

5. A baffle that can distract the fluid pattern.

HOW TO CONDUCT THE EXPERIMENT
EXPERIMENT 1
1. Calculate the density of the fluid by determining the mass and volume of the fluid that been selected.
2. Fill in the water container with the fluid (at least 2 litres of water/chosen fluid )
3. Add some quantity of the pellet chosen into the fluid container.
4. Select one (1) type of impellers (its depend on the mixer that you select).
(Note: Make sure the gap between the bottom of the container and the impeller at least 10 cm height)
5. Turn up the speed of the impeller until you see a vortex is formed on the surface of the fluid.
6. Observe the fluid pattern
7. Repeat the procedure with different type of impeller/mixer

EXPERIMENT 2
Do the same procedure in experiment 1 but add a baffle to both of the fluid and observe the fluid pattern. Make sure
there is a gap at least 3 cm from the container wall.
RESULTS
1. Density of the fluids chosen.
2. Drawings of flow patterns of all of the experiments conducted (include pictures of the flow pattern as well)

• 3 impellers
• 2 types of fluids No of experiment ?
• Baffle/without baffle
