(Filtration) INSTRUCTIONS. Read the following slides on separation of mixtures and then write the information in your books.
Follow the instructions given in the powerpoint.
OBJECTIVES 1. Describe the separation of mixtures by methods of filtration 2. Draw diagrams to show the process of filtration
3. State the applications ( uses ) of filtration.
4. Investigate the process of filtration. Filtration (Filtering). • Filtration is used to separate insoluble( cannot be dissolved) solids from a liquid. • The filter which is often fine paper or mesh only allows the liquid to pass through. • AT HOME EXPERIMENT. • Materials: strainer with mesh, two containers, water, rice grains. • • Method: Make a mixture of water and rice grains in one container. • Pour mixture into strainer placed over second container. Diagram of filtration IN THE LAB Using Filter PAPER. • DRAW DIAGRAM OF FILTRATION IN LAB HERE.
• A filter paper is folded into half and
then folded into quarters. • Filter paper is placed in filter funnel. • Mixture of sand and water is poured onto filter paper in filter funnel (sand is insoluble in water). • Mixture is filtered through the paper in the funnel into a second beaker. • The sand left on the filter paper is called the residue • The water collected in the beaker is called the filtrate. • Question: What was the filtrate and residue in the home experiment? APPLICATION of Filtering • A domestic water filter uses the principles of filtering. • Water containing insoluble impurities is a mixture. • The impurities can be removed by filtering, making the water more suitable for drinking. • The impurities stay in the filter and the clean water is collected. APPLICATION OF FILTERING • Window screens of a fine mesh separate insects from air so preventing mosquitoes from the inside of our buildings.
• In the kitchen, food is filtered or drained to
separate from the cooking liquid ( oil or water).
• All car engines have a fuel filter to remove
insoluble impurities from the fuel and an air filter to collect dirt from the air before it goes into the engine. Activity. • Name the method of separation you would use to separate these mixtures. • Give a reason for your answer. • Note: More than one method is possible to separate each mixture, give reason for method chosen.
