SUBJECT: CHEMISTRY TOPIC: TYPES OF

MIXTURES
INSTRUCTIONS.
Read the following slides on types of mixture and then write the
information in your books.

Follow the instructions given in the powerpoint.

Keep completed activities until school reopens as I have limited

access to internet connectivity.
OBJECTIVES.
At the end of the lesson you should be able to:
1.distinguish between homogenous and heterogeneous mixtures.
2. state at least ONE example of a homogenous and a heterogeneous mixture.
3. manipulate apparatus to make homogenous and heterogeneous mixtures.

AT HOME EXPERIMENT.
Get two containers, some salt, soil ( dirt or sand) and water.
Make a mixture of salt and water in one container and soil and water in another
container.
Leave mixtures for 5 minutes.
Then observe each mixture and answer the following questions.

Question: In which of the two mixtures are you not able to see the individual
parts making up the mixture?

Question: In which of the two mixtures are you able to see all the substances
mixed together?
TYPES OF MIXTURES.
•The mixture that you are unable to see the individual parts
of the mixture is called a homogeneous mixture.
•Identify the homogeneous mixture.

•The mixture that you can see all the parts of the mixture
is called a heterogeneous mixture
•Identify the heterogeneous mixture.
HOMOGENOUS MIXTURE.

•These are mixtures that it is not possible to identify the parts

making up the mixture (have a uniform composition)
•Homogenous mixtures are called solutions.
•A solution contain particles of a solute spread evenly
throughout a solvent.
•Solute is the substance that is dissolved and is usually
present in the smaller quantity.
•Solutes can either be a solid, liquid or gas. The solvent is
usually present in a larger quantity.

QUESTION: Identify the Solute and solvent in the two mixtures

from the home experiment.
Examples of solutions
•a solid dissolved in a liquid eg. sugar or salt dissolved in water
•a gas dissolved in a liquid eg, oxygen dissolved in water, carbon
dioxide dissolved in water ( fizzy drinks)
•a liquid dissolved in another liquid eg. Syrup in water.

HETEROGENEOUS
MIXTURES
•Heterogeneous mixtures are those mixtures that the
substances mixed together can be seen individually
(easily distinguished).eg sand and water mixture.

TYPES OF
HETEROGENEOUS
MIXTURES.
There are two types of heterogeneous mixtures
•Suspension
•Colloid.
•In a suspension small solid particles are spread
throughout a liquid. The solid particles settle out
on standing.
•Examples include: soil and water and powdered
chalk in water.
•Colloids are mixtures with particles that are not dissolved in
the liquid but they do not separate out on standing.

• Example: gels (solid in a liquid) and foam

Foam.
ACTIVITY
Identify each material as either heterogeneous or homogenous mixture. If the material is heterogeneous identify
it as either, colloid or suspension. If the material is homogenous ( solution) identify the solute and solvent. One
is done for you.
Mixture. Type of Is it a solution, colloid or If it is a solution, name
mixture suspension the solvent and solute.
Solute Solvent
Instant coffee and milk.
Syrup and water
Soil and water.
