Subtopic: Separation of mixtures (chromatography). INSTRUCTIONS. Read the following slides on separation of mixtures and then write the information in your books.
Follow the instructions given in the powerpoint.
OBJECTIVES 1. Describe the separation of mixtures by methods of chromatography. 2. Draw diagrams to show the process of chromatography.
3. State the applications ( uses ) of chromatography.
CHROMATOGRAPHY •This is used to separate a mixtures with more than one components such as water based black ink.
• It is based on the solubility( ability to dissolve in a
solvent) of the parts of the mixture APPARATUS FOR CHROMATOGRAPHY. DRAW DIAGRAM OF CHROMATOGRAPHY. •As the ethanol ( alcohol) moves up the filter paper the different components of the ink mixture separate and moves up the paper based on their solubility in the solvent. •The more soluble the component of the mixture the faster it will move with the solvent up the filter paper. •The substance that moves faster goes furthest up the paper.
•The substance that moves
slowest goes the least distance.
•The mixture of substances is
separated into separate spots. USES OF CHROMATOGRAPHY •Chromatography is very useful as it can successfully separate very small quantities of substances.
•This makes it an important technique for analyzing extracts
of materials from animal and plant tissues and for separating compounds from residue of the solutions in which they are formed.
