PROPERTIES ( FEATURES) OF MIXTURES
AT HOME EXPERIMENT( you can try this at home).
Consider these two containers
• Container 1 with nail
• Container 2 with stones.
If you where to pour the stones in the container with nail and use a spoon to mix them
together.
You would have formed a mixture of nail and stones.
Question: What type of changed formed the mixture? Was it a physical or a chemical
change?
Revise what a physical and chemical change is.
Question: It means that mixtures are formed from which means, physical or chemical?
PROPERTIES ( FEATURES) OF MIXTURES
Question: If you add more stones into the container with the nails does it now
contain the same amounts of nails and stones in comparison to when you first
added the stones?
Is it a new mixture?
This means that the individual parts of the mixture is not always the same.
Question: If you were given a magnet, would you be able to use the magnet to
separate the parts of the mixture?
It means that mixtures can be separated by physical means.

Question: If you were given a magnet, would you be able to use the magnet to
separate the parts of the mixture?
It means that mixtures can be separated by physical means and that the individual parts
making up the mixture still has its individual features when combined in a mixture.
SUMMARY OF PROPERTIES
( FEATURES) OF MIXTURES
1.Formed by physical means with only small energy changes ( little heat or light
is produced)
2.Has a variable composition
3.Has properties similar to those of the individual substances making up the
mixture.
4.Substances making up the mixture can be separated by physical means.
ACTIVITY
Look back on the information on the lesson on compounds and then write TWO differences
between a compound and a mixture.
ACTIVITY.
•Classify each of the following as a element, (E) compound (C) or mixture (M). Write the
letter X if it is none of these
Diamond____________ Electricity ___________ Milk______________
Sulphur Acid (HSO4) ______ Gasoline_________ Water (H20) _________
Energy________________ Wood___________________ Air_______________
Ink__________________ Concrete_________________ Pile of
garbage_________
•Match each of the following diagrams by writing the letter beside the correct description.
Diagrams will be used once.
