INSTRUCTIONS.
Read the following slides on Sexually transmitted
infections and then write the information in your books.

Follow the instructions given in the powerpoint.


This should be done during class sessions for the week.

Keep completed activities until school reopens as I have


limited access to internet connectivity.
OBJECTIVES.
At the end of the lesson you should be able to:
1. Define the term sexually transmitted infections (STI)
2. State the meaning of the following terms in relation to diseases.
• Causative agent
• Symptoms
• Signs
• Treatment
• Prevention
3. State the causative agent, at least two symptoms or signs, treatment,
prevention of Gonorrhea and its effects on the body.

•I am sure you have been hearing on the radio and television about the
Corona Covid 19 diseases that is now affecting the world.
• Covid 19 is NOT a sexually transmitted infection but it can be used to
help you better understand some of the terms used to describe diseases.
• I am sure you have heard persons using these terms when they are
speaking about Covid 19.
Cause ( causative agent), symptoms and signs, treatment, prevention.
•Some of the things being said about Covid 19 as it relates to these
terms are as follows:
• The cause is a virus.
•Symptoms and signs include: coughing, sneezing and shortness of
breath
•Treatment : there is no treatment for the disease as its new.
•Prevention of Covid 19 includes: staying at home to reduce contact,
washing of your hands with soap and water or using alcohol and
hand sanitizers.

Question: Based on the use of these terms in
providing information about Covid 19 what do you
think is the meaning of these terms in your own
words.

TERMS USED TO DESCRIBE DISEASES OR
INFECTIONS.
•Causative agent (pathogen): This is the organism (germ) that causes the
infection.
•Symptoms: This is what the person with the infection feels to know they
are
infected
•Signs: This is what a person looking on the infected person would see to
know that the person has an infection.
•Treatment: This is the medication taken to get rid of the infection.
•Prevention: This is what is done to stop person from getting the infection.
WHAT IS A SEXUALLY
TRANSMITTED INFECTION
•Sexually transmitted infections(STI) is an infection someone gets by
having unprotected sexual intercourse with someone who is already
infected.
•(STI) are spread from person to person by sexual contact.
• STIs can cause severe illness and even death.
• The best way to avoid STI is to only have one sexual partner if
abstinence is impossible.
•This means sex should only take place within marriage.
TYPES OF SEXUALLY
TRANSMITTED INFECTIONS.
Common STIs include:
 Gonorrhea
 Syphilis
 Genital herpes
 HIV/AIDS
 Chlamydia
 Yeast
Human Papilloma Virus (HPV))
N.B. We will be looking at these diseases in terms of the words used to describe
diseases.
GONORRHEA.
Causative agent:
Bacterium.
Symptoms in men
A burning feeling when
urinating
A discharge from the penis
which may be thick, creamy
and yellow-green,
Pain or swelling of the testes.
 
Symptoms in women
Changes in discharge from the vagina
Abdominal pains sometimes with
fever
Pain during sex.
Treatment: Antibiotics
Example: Penicillin

Prevention:
Use of a condom (male and
female) during sex.
Abstinence
EFFECTS OF GONORRHEA ON
BODY
•If untreated gonorrhea can cause infections of the cervix, fallopian
tube, uterus and abdomen in women.
•It causes long term health problems such as infertility ( unable to
have children).
• Infertility occurs in both men and women.
•Causes blindness in newborn babies of infected mothers
•Can affect the eye, throat, rectum.
ACTIVITY.
Write five things in your own words that you have learnt
about STIs and Gonorrhea.
