ABOUT THE POET
Kamala Das popularly known by her one-time
pen name Madhavikutty, was an Indian poet
in English as well as an author in Malayalam
from Kerala, India. Kamala Das' first book of
poetry, Summer in Calcutta was a breath of
fresh air in Indian English poetry. She wrote
chiefly of love, betrayal, and the consequent
anguish. She was also a widely read columnist
and wrote on diverse topics including
women's issues, child care, politics, etc. She
won Kerala Sahitya Academy Award and
Sahitya Academy Award.
THEME OF THE POEM
The theme of the poem is ‘ageing’ which is the
law of nature. It also depicts the helplessness
and aspirations of the young generation. It
portrays the different stages of life and how
everybody grows old and faces various
situations that life throws at them. It talks about
the anguish of the daughter over her mother’s
advancing age and the fear of permananet
separation from her.
SUMMARY OF THE POEM
• The summary of the poem depicts the dilemma of a child seeing her mother getting
old. The lifeless and pale face of the mother pained the poet’s heart. Thus, to drive
away from her stressful consideration, she begins watching out at the trees. She
likewise sees little youngsters hurrying out of their homes to play outside. This helps
her to remember youth and excellence. Here, she shows the contrast between the
world outside and the inside gloominess.

• It further tells us that the daughter reaches the airport and waits far away from her
mother. As she bids goodbye to her, the image of her old, pale face strikes her. She
compares how one grows old and starts looking like the faded moon in the winter.

• The poet suddenly feels sad about getting separated from her mother as she felt in
her childhood. She hopes to see her mother again. She expects her mother to enjoy
her life and not to cry in front of her.
IMPORTANCE OF PARENTS IN
FAMILY
• Parents play a crucial role in a family, and their importance cannot be overstated. Their
contributions extend to the emotional, social, and developmental well-being of their
children and the overall functioning of the family unit. Parents are the foundation of a
family. Their guidance, love, and support are essential for nurturing well-adjusted,
responsible, and emotionally healthy individuals who can contribute positively to society.
• The importance of a mother for her child is immeasurable and extends across various
aspects of a child's life. Mothers provide not only the physical care but also the
emotional, social, and moral support that helps children grow into healthy, well-adjusted,
and capable individuals. Their nurturing and guidance have a lasting impact on a child's
development and are essential for building strong foundations for future success and
happiness.
DISTRIBUTION AND LIVING CONDITIONS OF OLD
AGE HOMES IN INDIA
 The 2007 Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act envisaged old-age homes in
each district, to be set up by the state government
 The biting reality is that just 482 districts of the 750-plus districts in the country have care homes
 Around 728 old age homes all over India
 Kerala having the most old age homes i.e. 124
 According to reports there could be an annual 25 per cent increase in old age homes in India.
 Out of the 728 old age homes only 325 are free to live in and rest demand pay for service
 Many old age homes are reported to provide stale and inadequate amount of food, no medical
attention and instances of cases of violence in the old age homes.
 Though many old age home provide good facilities they are expensive.
 Govt should focus on building more old age homes and give proper facilities and that too at a minimal
cost.
CONCLUSION
To conclude, my mother at sixty six summary revolves
around the beautiful relationship between the poet and
her mother. The summary shows the theme of the
advancing age of the mother of the author and the fear
of separation. This apparently short poem touches
upon the theme of a beautiful bond between the
mother and the daughter. It shows how beautiful a
relationship a mother and a daughter can have.
