COURSE DESCRIPTION
Develop transferable critical reading, thinking and writing skills and
strategies for post-secondary and professional settings. Recognize the
developmental nature of English language learning (i.e. communicative
competence) through: Vocabulary Acquisition, Canadian academic writing
processes, Canadian academic writing forms, Grammatical Accuracy,
Metacognition
Learner Growth: thoughtful communication, ethical research, problem-
analysis and solving, critical reading, reflective purposeful and clear writer
and engaged citizens who can bring value and integrity to their
communities ad workplaces through effective communication.
COURSE OUTCOMES
1. Read a variety of texts actively to paraphrase and summarize
accurately.
2. Identify and analyze strategies used by authors to persuade
audiences.
3. Evaluate a variety of texts for reliability and effectiveness.
4. Develop and apply a process for writing well-structured texts that
employ tone and language appropriate to their context.
5. Demonstrate digital fluency by locating and assessing online
information and using conventional citation practices.

ASSIGNMENT POLICY
Assignments must be word-processed. As Humber students you have access to Microsoft
365 here: humber.ca/microsoft365
Late assignments will be penalized 10% per day to a maximum of five (5) days, after
which they are not accepted and a zero (0) grade is assigned.
Keep all marked assignments, feedback on workshop/labs, and the course outline. In
cases of disagreement over marks or work completion, assignments must be produced by
the student.
