SETS
NATURE OF MATHEMATICS
WHAT IS A SET?

A set is a collection of numbers,

people, letters of the alphabet,
any other sets and other distinct
objects.

In mathematics, they are

conventionally represented by
CAPITAL LETTERS.

The objects in the set are called

ELEMENTS.

NATURE OF MATHEMATICS: MATHEMATICAL

34
LANGUAGE AND SYMBOLS
HOW ARE SETS
DESCRIBED?
1. Using a description
EXAMPLE: A is the set of
the first four positive
integers.

2. Listing each member

of the set
EXAMPLE: A = {1, 2, 3, 4}

NATURE OF MATHEMATICS: MATHEMATICAL

35
LANGUAGE AND SYMBOLS
IMPORTANT
NOTES
1. Order is irrelevant
EXAMPLE: A is the set of
the first four positive
integers.
A = {1, 2, 3, 4} or
A = {4, 1, 3, 2} or

NATURE OF MATHEMATICS: MATHEMATICAL

36
LANGUAGE AND SYMBOLS
IMPORTANT
NOTES
2. List can be abbreviated
whet the set has many
elements.

EXAMPLE: B is the set of

the first five thousand
positive integers.

A = {1, 2, 3, …,5000}

NATURE OF MATHEMATICS: MATHEMATICAL

37
LANGUAGE AND SYMBOLS
CONCEPT OF SUBSET
Considering the given sets A and B, if every
member of set A is also a member of set B,
it can also be stated that:

A is a subset of B

38
CONCEPT OF UNIVERSAL SET
The universal set U is the set that has all the
elements that are being considered in the
problem.

A = {1, 2, 3, 4}
B = {2, 4, 6, 8}
U = {1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8}
39
CONCEPT OF NULL SET

A set with no element.

Φ={}

40
ACTIVITY: SET

A = {23, 44, 60, 61, 109, 404, 6000}
B = {60, 109, 404}

1. Write the Universal Set.

2. Set A is a subset of B. True or False.
3. Set B is a subset of A. True or False.
4. Write the Null Set.

41
ACTIVITY: SET
Given:
W = {1, 2, 3, … , 1000}
Y = {2, 3, 4, … , 100}

1. Write the Universal Set.

2. Set W is a subset of Y. True or False.
3. Set Y is a subset of W. True or False.
4. Write the Null Set.

42
ACTIVITY: SET
Given:
M = {2, 4, 6, … , 100}
N = {1, 3, 5, … , 99}

1. Write the Universal Set.

2. Set N is a subset of M. True or False.
3. Set M is a subset of N. True or False.
4. Write the Null Set.

43
ACTIVITY: SET
Given:
O is the set of the first six positive integers.
P is the set of the first five odd numbers.

1. Write the Universal Set.

2. Set O is a subset of P. True or False.
3. Set P is a subset of O. True or False.
4. Write the Null Set.
