Health and Safety in the Workplace
Safety, Health and Welfare at work Act 2005
Provision Description
1. Employers are required to prepare a safety statement for the workplace. This statement should
identify hazards, assess the risks arising from such hazards, and identify the steps to be take to deal
with any risks.
2. Employers, as far as reasonably possible, will prevent any improper conduct or behaviour likely to
put the safety, health and welfare of employees at risk.

3. A duty will be placed on employees not to be under the influence of drink or drugs in the workplace.

4. Employees will be required to undergo any reasonable medical or other assessment if requested to do
so.
5. Employers will be required to appoint a competent person as the organisation safety officer. The role
of the officer is to ensure that the Act is enforced.
Safety • The Health and Safety Authority (HAS) provides a
range standardised safety signs.

• Yellow for caution
• Green for positive reaction
• Blue for mandatory actions
• Discs for prohibitions and instructions
• Triangles for warnings
• Squares and rectangles for emergency and information.
Environmenta • The MANUFACTURE, STORAGE, DISPOSAL and USE of
products can sometimes have an adverse effect on human health

There is a risk that toxic chemicals that escape into the environment
will pollute the air, land and water. It is important that governments
take steps to minimise these risks.
• WEEE Directive
The Waste Electrcial and Electronic Equipment Directive is an EU
directive to reduce waste from electrical and electronic equipment.
• Producer Recycling Fund Contribution (PRFC)
PRFC has been applied to the retail price of all new electrical and
electronic goods. This fee was introduced to fund the recycling and safe
disposal of old electrics.
