Diffusion an Osmosis
Lesson Objectives
 By the end of the lesson, the students will be
able to:

◦ Define diffusion and osmosis.

◦ Give examples of diffusion and osmosis.

◦ Draw diagrams to explain diffusion and osmosis.

What is Diffusion?
 Diffusion is the
movement of
particles from
higher to lower
concentration until
the particles are
evenly distributed.

Real Life Examples of Diffusion

Drinks mix in water. Smoke in air.

Real Life Examples of Diffusion

Scent of perform spreads Tea diffuses from bag to

in air. water.
Importance of Diffusion in Living
Things
 Oxygen moves into body cells by diffusion.
 Carbon dioxide moves out of body cells by

diffusion.
 Carbon dioxide needed for photosynthesis

moves into leaves by diffusion.

 Oxygen produced in photosynthesis moves

out of the plant leaves by diffusion.

 Glucose and amino acid from the food we eat

enter our blood by diffusion.

What is osmosis?
 Osmosis: movement of water particles across
a membrane from a higher water
concentration to low water concentration.

Fingers lose water. Gummy bears gain water

Effect of Osmosis on Plant Cells
Effect of Osmosis
Importance of osmosis is in Living
Organisms
 Keeps the cell hydrated.
 Keeps plant cells turgid. This causes non-woody
stems to stand upright and keeps leaves firm.
 Keeps water moving from the roots to the leaves
where it is used during photosynthesis.
 Enables the guard cells to control the size of the
stomata in the leaves. This regulates the lost of
water from plant leaves.
 Prevents the body from losing too much water
by enabling re-absorption of water from the
kidney tubules back into the blood.
