Descriptive Adjectives
What is Descriptive Adjective?
● Describes things in a more interesting way.

● They are words that describes noun.

● It provides information about one quality or part of a noun.

● It can be used before the noun or can be added after the noun with a linking verb.

Examples:

My beautiful friend moved to Kansas.

My brilliant friends moved to Kansas.

My hilarious friend moved to Kansas.

My food is delicious.
 Types of Descriptive Adjectives
Simple Adjective
• Simple Adjectives are the most grammatically basic and common type of descriptive adjectives.

Examples:

I feel anxious every time I present on stage.

The skies are blue.

The mirrors are dusty.

Her clothes are expensive.

This salad is made from fresh lettuce.

We experienced strong winds on vacation.

 Types of Descriptive Adjectives
Compound Adjectives
• Compound Adjectives consists of two words connected by a hyphen.

• Using compound adjectives helps us get even more specific descriptions.

Examples:

She is broken-hearted.

He is left-handed.

The famous coffee shop is just next-door.

My mom is short-tempered.

Lisa is very self-centered.

 Types of Descriptive Adjectives
Proper Adjectives
• Proper adjectives come from proper nouns.

• They specify which nation, region, religion, or era a noun comes from.

Example:

Canadian bread is best with maple syrup.

Mexican biryani is great for lunch.

French toasts and eggs are my breakfast

favorites.

Shakespearean sonnets are the best.

 Important Note!
• In using multiple descriptive adjectives in a sentence, there is an order in
which you should arrange them. Adjectives that describe opinion typically
precede adjectives that describe color, size, shape and more.

For example:

The ugly red office chair sat in the corner.

The office red ugly chair sat in the corner.

 Activity: Get one-fourth sheet of paper and identify the
adjectives used in each sentence. Write your answer directly.
