Secant Length Theorem
Suppose one secant intersects a circle at A
and B, and a second secant intersects the
circle at C and D. If the secants intersect at P,
then
(AP) (BP) = (CP) (DP)
Teach Me
Case 1. Two secants
intersect inside the
circle at point P.
Solution:
Using the secant length theorem
MP · PN = SP · PT
(2) (20) = (5) (PT)
40 = (5)( PT)
PT = 8
Example 2:
Given secants and intersecting at P, with
lengths as shown, Find CD.
Solution:
is found by first getting
PA · PB = PC · PD
(10) ( 4 ) = ( CP)( 5 )
40 = (CP) (5) Since CP = PD + CD
CP = 8 8 = 5 + CD
8 - 5 = CD
CD = 3

Secant – Tangent Length Theorem
Suppose one secant intersects a circle at A and B, and
a line PC is tangent to circle at point C. If the secant and
tangent intersect outside the circle at point P, then
PA · PB = (PC)2
Example 3:
In the figure below, is tangent to the circle at N.
If MP = 6 and
MN = 12, find MQ and PQ.
Solution:
Use the secant tangent theorem
