INTERROGATIVE PRONOUNS:
WHO, WHICH, WHAT

• They can function as:


– Subject.
• Who, what, which + verb + object?
[The order is like an affirmative sentence]
• The verb is always in 3rd person singular, but the answer
can be singular or plural.
– Who works in this company? He works in this company. / Two of
my best friends work in this company.
– What makes you feel happy? Babies make me feel happy.
– Who is that man? He is my elder brother.
– What happened in the party? We were dancing all night.
– Which is Peter’s car? The red one.

• They can function as:

– Object.
• Who, what, which + auxiliary verb (be / do) + subject +
verb? [The order is like an interrogative sentence: Wh- + aux. + sj + verb?]
– Who did you talk yesterday?
– What are you doing this evening?
– Which / what do you prefer?
– Which sport do you play?

• When the verb has a preposition, this one is at the end


of the question.
– Who did you play baseball with?
