Nature of
Mathematics
The emergence of digital
technology has sparked a
monumental rise in the rate of
which we consume and produce
data. Before the Internet, it could
take hours to get several volumes
of resources from the library for a
research paper.
NATURE OF
MATHEMATICS

As rational creatures,
we tend to identify
and follow patterns,
whether consciously
or subconsciously.
NATURE OF
MATHEMATICS

In this chapter, we will be

looking at patterns and
regularities in the world, and
how mathematics comes into
play, both in nature and in
human endeavors.

Symmetry
It indicates that you can draw
an imaginary line across an
object and the resulting parts
are mirror images of each
other.
Examples:
•Butterfly
•Leonardo da Vinci Vitruvian
Man
•Starfish
GEC 4

Symmetry
The butterfly is symmetric
by the dotted line. Note
that the left and right are
exactly the same. This
type of symmetry is
known as line or bilateral
symmetry.

Symmetry

The Leonardo the

Vinci Vitruvian
Man show the
proportion and
symmetry of the
human body.
GEC 4

Symmetry

If you rotate the starfish

you can still achieve the
same appearance as the
original position. This is
known as rotational
symmetry.
GEC 4

Symmetry

The smallest angles that

a figure can be rotated
while still preserving the
original formation is
called the angle of
rotation.
GEC 4

Symmetry

The more common

way of describing
rotation symmetry is
by order of rotation.

honeycomb and not
any other polygon?

can think of each hexagon
as composed of six
equilateral triangles with
side equal to 2 cm.

Tigers’ Stripes and

Hyenas’ Spots
Patterns are also exhibited in the external
appearances of animals. The tiger looks and
hyenas spot, these seemly randomly designs are
believed to the governed by mathematical
equation.
GEC 4

Tigers’ Stripes and

Hyenas’ Spots
According to a theory by Alan Turing the
chemical factors in the cell determine growth
patterns, and influence factors like hair color.
There are two chemical process: reaction and
diffusion.
GEC 4

The Sunflower
Looking at a sunflower up close, you will
notice that there is a define pattern of
clockwise and counterclockwise arcs or
spirals extending outward from the center
of the flower.
GEC 4

The Snail’s Shell

As the snails grow, their shells also
expand proportionally. This process
results in a refined spiral structure, it
is called equiangular spiral.
GEC 4

Flower Petals
•Flowers are easily considered as
things of beauty.
•Flowers with five petals are said to
be the most common.
•Number of petals are all Fibonacci
numbers.
