What is Verb ?

• Verb comes from the Latin Verbum


• Verbum is a word that conveys an action or
a state of being
• A word used to describe an action, state, or
occurrence
Verb tells ???
1. What a person or thing does :
Hari laughs. The clock strikes.

2. What is done to a person or thing :


Hari is scolded. The window is broken.

3. What a person or thing is :


I feel sorry. The cat is dead.
Types of Verbs
1. State (stative) / Action (dynamic)

2. Main / helping (auxiliary)

3. Regular / Irregular

4. Transitive / intransitive
STATE VERBS ???
 State means situation

Be, have,
think, like, own
1. I have a large family.

2. Vibha likes chocolate ice cream.

 State verbs cannot be used in –ing (continuous)


forms
ACTION VERBS ???
Shows physical activity
Kick , shout, run, climb, sit, stand, grow

1. The children are playing in the park.

MAIN / HELPING VERBS
Be, do, have
Modals : can, could, may, might, will,
would, shall, should, must
Verb in a sentence is used in two ways :
1. Main verb
2. Helping verb
EXAMPLES
1.Rosy is playing now. (be- tense)
is : 1. helping verb
2. showing tense
2. Rosy isn’t playing now. ( be- negative)
3. Is Rosy playing now. (be- question)
4. Do you play golf every weekend?
(do- question)

5. I don’t play golf every weekend.


(do- negative)

6. We have visited the UK four times.

( have - life experience)

We visited the UK last year.


(single experience)
7. We have a car. (main verb)

MODALS
Modals means to express mood, attitude or feelings of speaker

can, could, may,


might, will, would, shall, should, must

1. It might rain today. (Prediction)

2. I can swim. (Ability)

3. You mustn’t speak loudly in the hospital. (Prohibition )


REGULAR/ IREGULAR VERBS

Only verbs can have tenses :

2. Past
3. Future

TRANSITIVE / INTRANSITIVE
TRANSITIVE VERB
Transitive Verb : always takes an object.
Object : a noun or pronoun that receives the action.

hit, give, carry, climb, make, kiss, take

David made a picture.


INTRANSITIVE VERB
INTRANSITIVE VERB : Does not take an object.

live, die, laugh, cry, run, sleep, sit, stand

The old man laughed loudly.
