Verb-is a word that expresses an action or state of being.

Verb tense is
indicated as to when the action happened. There a three basic verb
tenses: Present Tense-action done in present time ; Past Tense-
action had already happened in the immediate past, and Future
Aspect-action is still to happen sometime later.

Two kinds of Verbs

Action Verb-expresses action in the three different tenses.

Ex. run , dance , wait , sing , hold , appear , etc.

Linking Verb-expresses a state of being ; connects the subject of the

sentence with the predicate. It depends on the number of the subject,
i.e. singular or plural and the tense of the verb.
Present / Past
( I ) am / was :
is : for singular subjects ( am is used for the
pronoun , I )
Ex. I am a student in this school. ( true as of your state of being at
present time )
I was a student in this school. ( not anymore because you may
have graduated already, transferred to another school or working at
the time you said this statement )
Ex. Efren is a student in this school.
Efren was a student in this school. ( the subject of the sentence is
singular and therefore the singular form is used for both present and
past tense )
Present / Past
are / were : for plural subjects ( meaning more than one )
Ex. Chito , Mike , and Luz are students in this school. ( the subject in
this sentence is already plural )
Chito , Mike , and Luz were students in this school. ( the state of
being is in the past already ) or
They are students in this school. / They were students in this
school. ( They refers to Chito , Mike , and Luz , a plural pronoun )
