What I Need to Know (Concept)

Using the Simple Aspect of Verbs

Tense refers to time as in present, past, and future. Aspect has to do with the form or
structure of the action happening at any time.

Tense Form Examples

Present base (plural) walk, write
-s (singular) walks, writes
Past -ed (regular) walked
(irregular) wrote
Future will + base will walk
will write

The simple present tense of the verb may not only express a present action but also express
other things:
 It denotes general truth of fact.
Examples: The family is the basic unit of the society.
Different families are living in the community.
 It denotes geographical location.
Examples: The Philippines is in Southeast Asia.
The Visayan community lies between Luzon and Mindanao.
 It denotes consistently repeated action.
Examples: Father works for the family every day.
Mother cooks delicious pork adobo every Saturday.

We add -s or -es to the verb in the present tense if the subject of that sentence is singular.
I and you are exceptions.
We use the base form of the verb if the subject of the sentence is plural, and for the
pronouns I and you.
The be-form of the verbs is and are are also used to express the present time. Other
present forms are am, has, and have.

3
The simple past tense of the verb is used to show an action done in the past.
 The past tense of regular verbs is formed by adding –d or –ed to their present tense
form.
Examples: Father worked abroad for the past three years.
He arrived safely yesterday.
 Irregular verbs form their past by changing their spelling.
Examples: win - won
bring - brought
Jannarie Zarzoso won in the first-ever online pageant of MBC -Aliwan Fiesta
Digital Queen and was crowned last October 3, 2020.
She brought much pride and honor not only to Cabadbaran City but also to the
whole province of Agusan del Norte and all throughout Caraga Region.

 Some irregular verbs are not changed at all. The present and the past forms are the
same.
Examples: hit - hit
read - read
I was shocked when I read the news yesterday that my friend’s father was
accidentally hit by a car.
 We use did in questions when we ask about what happened in the past.
Example: Did you answer your modules by yourself?
 We use the expression used to + verb to show an action that has been habitually done
but is no longer being done at present.
Example:
We used to go to malls during weekends but not anymore due to COVID 19.

The simple future tense expresses an action that is expected to come or happen in the future.

 Will or shall + base form are used to express a future action.

They can be used interchangeably although shall is commonly used for
pronouns I and We.
 Going to + the base form of the verb is preceded by a be-form of verb like
am, is, or are.
 Some of the future time indicators are tonight, this afternoon, next week, after
a year, and others.
Examples:
After this pandemic, we are going to have a family reunion. Our relatives will
come. Aunt Louise will take charge of the affair. There are things that we shall do.
And I shall take care of the program.
