Be verbs – (am, is, are, was, and were) don’t express


action. They connect the subject of the verb to more
information about that subject.
Correct Use of is, are, am, was and were
Present Tense
 Use is when the subject is one person, place or thing.
 Use are when the subject is more than one person, place, or
thing.
 Use are when the subject is you whether it means one person
or more than one person
 Use am when the subject is I in the present form.

Past Tense
 Use was when the subject is one person, place, or thing and
this information about the subject is in the past.
 Use were when the subject is more than one person, place or
thing and the information about the subject is in the past.
 Use were when the subject is you, whether it means one
person or more than one person and the information about
the subject is in the past.

Simple Present Tense of Verb

 the -s form of the verb is used when talking about one


person or thing.
 the verbs that come after singular subjects including the
words he, she, or it end with –s or –es.

 The base form of the verb is used when talking about two or
more persons or things.
 The verbs that come after I, you, we, they and plural subjects
do not end with –s or –es.

Simple Past Tense of Verb


 It shows actions that happened in the past.
 To form the simple past tense of the regular verb, add
-d or -ed to its base form.

Simple Future Tense of a Verb


To make the simple future tense of a verb, add “will” before the
base form of the verb.
Example:
