02
 What is Power Transmission ?

Power transmission refers to the process of

transmitting mechanical or electrical energy
from one location or source to another for the
purpose of performing work or generating
energy. And Electrical power transmission is
the process of delivering electrical energy
from power generation sources, such as power
plants or renewable energy facilities, to end-
users or distribution points where it can be
utilized for various applications. This process
involves the efficient and reliable transfer of
electrical power over long distances with
minimal losses.

 Superconducting Power
Transmission

Superconducting power transmission is a

technology that utilizes superconducting
materials to transmit electrical power
with minimal energy losses.
Superconductors have the potential to
revolutionize power transmission systems
due to their unique electrical properties,
particularly the absence of electrical
resistance when cooled to extremely low
temperatures. This property allows for
highly efficient and high-capacity power
transmission.

07
 What is Energy Storage?

Energy storage refers to the process of

capturing and storing energy in various
forms for later use. It plays a crucial role in
modern energy systems by helping to bridge
the gap between energy production and
consumption, ensuring a reliable and stable
supply of energy. Energy storage
technologies are essential for balancing the
intermittency of renewable energy sources,
managing peak energy demand, and
enhancing grid stability.

08
 Types of Energy Storage
 Batteries:
 Common and widely used for various
devices.
 User-friendly and low maintenance.
 Can be heavy and have limited lifespans.
 Capacitors:
 Quick energy storage and release.
 Commonly used in electronics and hybrid
vehicles.
 Suitable for providing short bursts of power.
 Fuel Cells:
 Utilize hydrogen to generate electricity.
 Highly efficient with zero emissions.
 Expensive and require specialized
infrastructure.

10
 Renewable Energy Storage

Semiconductors play a vital role in renewable

energy storage systems by enabling the
efficient conversion, control, and management
of electrical energy. Solar panels, which
convert sunlight into electricity, rely on
semiconductor materials, typically silicon, to
generate electrical current when photons of
light strike the material's surface.
Semiconductor diodes are used in solar
inverters to convert the direct current (DC)
output from solar panels into alternating
current (AC) suitable for home or grid use.

11
 Superconducting
Magnetic Energy
Storage System

A Superconducting Magnetic
Energy Storage (SMES) system is a
type of energy storage technology
that uses superconducting
materials to store and release
electrical energy. The Core
Component of SMES is
Superconducting Coil, which is
made of a superconducting
material like niobium-titanium or
niobium-tin.

12
 Energy Storage in SMES
•Electrical energy is fed into a superconducting coil.
•The superconducting coil generates a strong
magnetic field.
•This magnetic field stores electrical energy
efficiently with minimal energy loss.
•The stored energy can be maintained for extended
periods.
•When needed, the magnetic field can be rapidly
discharged.
•The discharge process converts the magnetic
energy back into electrical energy.
•SMES achieves high energy storage and retrieval
efficiency due to zero electrical resistance in the
superconducting coil.

13

in Energy Storage

1. Energy Conversion Efficiency

2. Fast Charging and Discharging
3. Energy Losses Reduction
4. Size and Weight Reduction
5. Stability and Reliability
6. Infrastructure Costs Reduction
7. Lower Environmental Impact

14
 Conclusion:

The application of superconductors in

power transmission and energy storage
represents a promising frontier in the field
of electrical engineering and energy
technology. In the realm of power
transmission, superconductors have the
potential to address some of the most
pressing challenges facing our energy
infrastructure. In the domain of energy
storage, superconducting materials offer
innovative solutions, such as
superconducting magnetic energy storage
systems.
