Types of Energy Storage
Batteries:
Common and widely used for various
devices.
User-friendly and low maintenance.
Can be heavy and have limited lifespans.
Capacitors:
Quick energy storage and release.
Commonly used in electronics and hybrid
vehicles.
Suitable for providing short bursts of power.

Magnetic Energy
Storage System
A Superconducting Magnetic
Energy Storage (SMES) system is a
type of energy storage technology
that uses superconducting
materials to store and release
electrical energy. The Core
Component of SMES is
Superconducting Coil, which is
made of a superconducting
material like niobium-titanium or
niobium-tin.
12
Energy Storage in SMES
•Electrical energy is fed into a superconducting coil.
•The superconducting coil generates a strong
magnetic field.
•This magnetic field stores electrical energy
efficiently with minimal energy loss.
•The stored energy can be maintained for extended
periods.
•When needed, the magnetic field can be rapidly
discharged.
•The discharge process converts the magnetic
energy back into electrical energy.
•SMES achieves high energy storage and retrieval
efficiency due to zero electrical resistance in the
superconducting coil.
