• It is the second largest country in the world in terms of

arrival of John Cabot in Newfoundland in 1497


• French and British expeditions explored, colonised

and fought over various parts of North America


• Between 1534 and 1542, Jacques Cartier made three

voyages across the Atlantic and heard two captured

guides speak the Iroquoian word Kanata, meaning
