Simple Past Tense Formula
Verbal Sentences
• S + V2 + O + Complement
Affirmative • He went to Bali last week.

SIMPLE PAST FORMATION
 Positive Form:

Simple Past tense has two kind of verbs :


regular and irregular verbs
_ed formation rules
1. If the verb ends in e, we just add d
Hope = Hoped

2. When a verb ends in a consonant + Y, the Y


changes to ied
Copy = Copied

3. Sometimes we double a final consonant. This happens


when a one-syllable verb ends with one vowel and one
consonant (except: y, w, x)
Beg = Begged
Negative and Interrogative Forms

To create a negative or an interrogative statement in simple past, it is


necessary, most of the time, the usages of the auxiliary did

Untuk membuat pernyataan negatif atau interogatif dalam simple past


tense, seringkali menggunakan auxiliary did

Contoh : I did not have a breakfast this morning.


We do not use the verb past form in negative and interrogative statements / kata
kerja dalam kalimat negatif dan introgatif tidak berbentuk V2 atau lampau

I didn’t saw the whale in the sea last Friday

Did you saw the whale in the sea last Friday?

I saw the whale in the sea last Friday /


saya melihat paus di laut jumat lalu

I didn’t see the whale in the sea last Friday /


Saya tidak melihat paus di laut jumat lalu

Did you see the whale in the sea last Friday? /


Apakah kamu melihat paus di laut jumat lalu?
Note: We do not use the auxiliar did in negative and interrogative
formation when the sentence uses the verb to be (was, were) / Kata DID
tidak digunakan pada kaliamat nominal

 Simple Past Usage

Mainly, we use the simple past for something in


the past that is already finishedir

Emma passed her exam last year

Elvis Presly died in 1977

When did you buy this car? I bought it about


three weeks ago
Change these sentences into past tense!
