Evolution of Operating System

The document discusses the evolution of operating systems across four generations from 1945 to the present. The first generation saw the development of electronic computing systems to replace mechanical ones. The second generation introduced batch processing to execute jobs sequentially. The third generation developed operating systems to serve multiple users simultaneously. The fourth generation featured networked computers, graphical user interfaces, and distributed computing.

⦿ In this generation the operating system is used for computer

networks where users are aware of the existence of computers that
are connected to one another.

⦿ At this generation users are also comforted with a Graphical User

Interface (GUI), which is an extremely comfortable graphical
computer interface, and the era of distributed computing has also
begun.
