CELL

The cell is the basic structural

and functional unit of all
forms of life.
CONCEPTS OF THE
CELL THEORY
The cell is the fundamental unit of
structure and function in living
things. All organisms are made up
of one or more cells. Cells arise
from other cells through cellular
division.
WHAT IS
CELL
THEORY?
WHY IS IT
IMPORTANT?
CELL THEORY
The cell theory definition states
that cells are the building blocks of
life. Cells both make up all living
things and run the processes
needed for life. Your hair, skin,
organs, etc. are all made up of
cells. In fact, each person is
estimated to be made up of nearly
THREE PRINCIPLES
OF CELL THEORY

 All living organisms are composed of one

or more cells.
 A cell is the basic structural and
functional unit of living organisms.
 All cells arise/come from pre-existing cells.

Cell theory by Schleiden and Schwann

First proposed by German scientists Theodor
Schwann and Matthias Jakob Schleiden in
1838, the theory that all plants and animals
are made up of cells marked a great conceptual
advance in biology and resulted in renewed
attention to the living processes that go on in
cells.

THEODOR SCHWANN
Theodor Schwann, German
physiologist who founded modern
histology by defining the cell as the
basic unit of animal structure. He also
coined the term ‘metabolism’ for the
chemical changes that take place in
living tissue and formulated the basic
principles of embryology.

MATTHIAS JAKOB
SCHLEIDEN
In 1838, Matthias Schleiden, a German
botanist, concluded that all plant tissues
are composed of cells and that an
embryonic plant arose from a single cell.
He declared that the cell is the basic
building block of all plant matter. This
statement of Schleiden was the first
generalizations concerning cells.

cells.
 A cell is the basic structural and functional unit of
living organisms.
 All cells arise/come from pre-existing cells.
