Cell Theory: States that living things are composed of one or more cells, that the cell is the

basic
unit of life, and that cells arise from existing cells.
KEY POINTS
- The cell theory describes the basic properties of all cells
- The three scientists that contributed to the development of cell theory are Matthias Schleiden,
Theodor Schwann and Rudolf Virchow
- A component of the cell theory is that the cell is the basic unit of life.
- A component of the cell theory is that all new cells arise from existing cells.

THE ORIGINAL CELL THEORY

- First purposed by Schleiden and Schwann in 1838. Originally, it stated three main
characteristics of all cell.
The first characteristic in traditional cell theory states that all forms of life are made from at least
one or more cells
The second characteristic in traditional cell theory states that cells only come from already pre-
existing cells and
The third characteristic in traiditional cell theory is that the cell is known as the smallest living
thing to exist.

THE MODERN CELL THEORY

- All organisms are made of cells: Each cell is a membrane of semi- permeable phospholipids
wrapped around cytosol or a solution of water and dissolved solutes.
- Cells are the most fundamental unit of life: Organisms can be single cells, which hold all fo the
components necessary for a metabolism, or they can be more comples.More complex organisms
divide the various metabolic tasks into different groups of cells, called tissues.
- Cells come from other cells: As far as we know, no cell on Earth currently has arisen
spontaneously. All cells are the result of cell division. When a cell is large enough, it replicates
it's DNA and important components.Thes components can then be divided into two daughter
cells, which are copies of each other.
