Is benzene aromatic?
19
Benzene, an Aromatic Compound
Benzene is
• an aromatic compound.
• It was isolated from other hydrocarbon by Michael Faraday In 1825
• Its molecular formula is C6H6.
• a ring of six C atoms, each bonded to one H atom.
• Friedrich August Kekulé suggested the structure of benzene
• a flat ring structure drawn with three alternating double bonds.
• represented by two structures, because the electrons are shared
equally among all the C atoms.
• represented by a line-angle structural formula using a circle in the
center instead of the alternating double bonds.

Safety Rules and Guidelines
1. I am a six carbon atom ring with six pi electrons that are free to
delocalized. I am conjugated, planar that is why sp3 is out of sight.
In my first and third carbon, substituents methyl are holding tight..
5. A. 1,2-dimethylbenzene
B. 1,4-dimethylbenzene
C. 1,3-dimethylbenzene
Assignment (Additional Activity)
Each group will brainstorm on what you have learned about aromatic
hydrocarbons. Each group will present the concept in your most creative
way. May it be in the form of dancing (dance formation), singing, jingle,
poetry, etc.
