Benzene, an Aromatic Compound

Benzene is
• an aromatic compound.
• It was isolated from other hydrocarbon by Michael Faraday In 1825
• Its molecular formula is C6H6.
• a ring of six C atoms, each bonded to one H atom.
• Friedrich August Kekulé suggested the structure of benzene
• a flat ring structure drawn with three alternating double bonds.
• represented by two structures, because the electrons are shared
equally among all the C atoms.
• represented by a line-angle structural formula using a circle in the
center instead of the alternating double bonds.

Nomenclature Aromatic Compounds

When a benzene ring is a substituent, — C 6H5,

it is named as a phenyl group.

Chemistry Link to Health:
Common Aromatic Compounds

 Toluene is used as a reactant to make drugs, dyes,

and explosives such as TNT (trinitrotoluene).
 The benzene ring is also found in some amino acids
 The benzene ring is found in pain relievers such as
aspirin, acetaminophen, and ibuprofen; and in
flavorings such as vanillin.

25
Common Aromatic Compounds

 Naphthalene has long been used as a primary

ingredient in mothballs due to its ability to repel
insects and prevent damage to clothing and fabrics.
It acts as a fumigant that releases a gas toxic to
insects and pests

Safety Rules and Guidelines

 Be careful in handling sharp objects. Keep the object

pointed away from yourself and other people at all
times
 Always be aware of hazards and risks
Know the hazards of the activity and anticipate dangers

BE SAFETY CONSCIOUS AT ALL TIMES!

Activity 2: “ Make my structure baby”

1. I am a six carbon atom ring with six pi electrons that are free to
delocalized. I am conjugated, planar that is why sp3 is out of sight.
In my first and third carbon, substituents methyl are holding tight..

2. I am made up of two rings fused together., planar, fully conjugated,

and sp2 hybridized. I have 10 pi electrons freely moving around my
carbons to delocalized . Chemists call me naphthalene but to your
mom, simply a mothballs is my name.

3. I am cyclic , planar,sp2 nybridized and fully conjugated, with 3 pi

bonds moving around my six carbon-ring. My common name is
toluene but in IUPAC naming, my parent name is benzene with an
alkyl group that was formed when one hydrogen was removed from
methane.

4. Each of my carbon atoms is sp2 hybridized. In addition, I am cylic,

conjugated and planar. But I am sad to say that I only have 4 sigma
Quiz
Identify the following as aromatic, antiaromatic or nonaromatic.
Answer the following:

Select the correct name for each compound.

4. A. chlorocyclohexane
B. chlorobenzene
C. 1-chlorobenzene

5. A. 1,2-dimethylbenzene
B. 1,4-dimethylbenzene
C. 1,3-dimethylbenzene
Assignment (Additional Activity)

Each group will brainstorm on what you have learned about aromatic
hydrocarbons. Each group will present the concept in your most creative
way. May it be in the form of dancing (dance formation), singing, jingle,
poetry, etc.

Criteria: Content – 20 points; Artistry – 10 points; Teamwork – 10 points
