MECHANISM OF

STOMATAL
TRANSPIRATION
• The mechanism of stomatal transpiration which takes place in day time can be
studied in 3 steps:
• (i) Osmotic diffusion of water in the leaf from xylem to intercellular spaces above
the stomata through the mesophyll cell.
• (ii) Opening and closing of stomata
• (iii) Simple diffusion of water vapours from intercellular spaces to outer
atmosphere through open stomata.
SIGNIFICANCE OF TRANSPIRATION
• It helps in the movement of water inside the plant.
• It helps in the absorption and translocation of mineral salts.
• I t helps in the regulation of temperature.
