Unit 301: Planning and overseeing electrical work
activities
Information
When designing an installation, information needs to be gathered from a
range of sources, including the following:
• Manufacturer technical instructions
• Building regulations
• British standards
• European standards
• Industry standards
• Verbal and written feedback from
the customer
• IET regulations
• Part P.
Measurements – scale
1m = 1,000mm
1m2 = 1,000,000mm2
1m = 1,000mm
1m3 = 1,000,000,000mm3
W = mg in newtons
Sources
Materials will be sourced from many sources, including:
• Manufacturers
• Merchants (wholesalers)
• Independent suppliers
• Catalogues
• Internet.
Requirements – estimating
The essence of all estimating is to divide the installations into appropriately
small units so that the cost can be estimated with sufficient accuracy in
terms of:
• Labour (time to complete)
• Materials
• Subcontracted items
Simple
estimating
schedule
There are many factors which determine the overall cost of a contract. It
goes far beyond simply adding up the cost of materials, expected hours,
cost and profit. For example, you need to take into account types of
personnel (experts in particular fields) and potential delays (see
previous presentation).
